Google Cloud Soars 103%, Yet Shares Fall Nearly 10%! The More Money AI Makes, the More Nervous Investors Get—Why?
Google’s earnings report was a real roller coaster: cloud revenue grew 103% year over year, a truly impressive result, but shares briefly fell nearly 10% after hours. It’s like a student getting a perfect score in math, only for their parents to frown because household expenses went over budget.
What went wrong? AI is indeed creating new opportunities, but training models, building data centers, and buying chips are all huge expenses. Revenue growth is exciting, but profits and cash flow determine whether a company can finish this AI marathon.
The market doesn’t dislike AI; it’s increasingly focused on a practical question: after investing so much money, when will companies actually earn it back?
At the end of the day, capital markets are neither charities nor an audience that simply comes to hear a story. In the past, companies could earn applause just by telling a compelling AI story; now, investors also want to see the books—and, ideally, hear the sound of real money hitting the bank.
But we don’t have to conclude that AI’s prospects are dim just because a stock fell sharply once. Building a highway requires an upfront investment; the real returns often only emerge once traffic starts flowing.
My view: AI growth determines how far a company can go, while its ability to make money determines how long the market is willing to wait. The real winner isn’t the company that burns the most cash, but the one that can turn its technological edge into sustained profits. The story has to be compelling, but the books have to look good too!
