If the crypto market were a large reality show, Strategy and Bitmine’s recent moves would definitely make for a talking point.
Strategy did not buy or sell BTC last week, while Bitmine increased its holdings by 10.452 ETH. One chose to sit back and watch, while the other continued adding to its position—naturally leaving investors wondering: have institutions started reallocating their confidence in crypto assets?
That’s possible, but drawing a conclusion now would be like watching a TV show trailer and deciding the villain has already won.
Although BTC and ETH are both crypto assets, their investment theses are not exactly the same. Bitcoin is more often seen as a scarce asset, while Ethereum is more closely tied to smart contracts, on-chain applications, and the development of its ecosystem. It’s perfectly normal for institutions to allocate different assets based on their own strategies.
More importantly, treasury companies are not just fan clubs that chant slogans. Buying requires capital, holding means taking on volatility, and financing also requires considering costs. No matter how lively the market gets, financial discipline can’t just clock out.
So Strategy’s pause may be part of its strategy or may have to do with the timing of its funding; Bitmine’s continued accumulation likewise cannot be directly equated with a bullish signal. The specific reasons will have to be judged in light of future disclosures.
My take: Don’t see one holding back and cry “retreat,” then see another adding to its position and shout “the bull market is here.” Institutional moves are worth studying, but not blindly copying. After all, when big players make a bad purchase, they still have a balance sheet to help explain it; when ordinary investors make one, they can often only stare at their account balance and ponder.
