In the early hours of October 29 Beijing time, the Fed is set to announce its rate decision. For the crypto market, the rate number is certainly important, but what may really get traders’ hearts racing is the post-meeting remarks.
Why? Because what the market fears most is not bad news, but the prospect of even worse news to come.
If rates remain unchanged but the Fed stresses that inflationary pressures remain stubborn and that there is limited room for easing ahead, the market will probably struggle to be happy. After all, saying “we’re pausing” while looking like “we’ll have to wait and see” is like your boss saying there’s no overtime today but not saying there won’t be any tomorrow.
Conversely, if the wording is more dovish and convinces the market that policy may shift toward easing in the future, risk appetite could be boosted, and BTC and other crypto assets may also find new trading opportunities.
Of course, dovish remarks don’t mean Bitcoin is guaranteed to rise. The dollar’s trend, bond yields, fund flows, and market positioning could all affect the final outcome.
I’m paying closer attention to three details: how the Fed assesses inflation, whether it hints at the future policy direction, and whether it pours cold water on the market’s optimistic expectations.
After all, the rate decision is a multiple-choice question, while Powell’s remarks are like a reading comprehension test. Everyone thinks they’ve understood it, but in the end the market may come up with a different answer.
So tonight, don’t just listen for whether there’s a rate cut. Listen carefully: is the Fed reassuring the market, or reminding it not to get too excited too soon?
