There’s a curious phenomenon in the investment market: a company can make money without its stock necessarily rising, while a company that spends money may see its stock fall first.
The most noteworthy thing about Microsoft’s and Google’s results this time is precisely this contrast.
Microsoft needs to prove that its Azure cloud business and AI products can continue to grow, and that the huge sums invested in building data centers can ultimately translate into revenue and cash flow. The market is focused not only on how fast growth is, but also on how much money it takes to fuel it.
Google faces a similar test. Search advertising is its traditional stronghold, cloud computing is a new growth driver, and AI is a race it has to join. The challenge is that AI can make search smarter, but it could also change how users find information. Google must embrace new technology while protecting the earning power of its traditional business—a bit like changing an engine while still making sure the plane takes off on time.
So, beating earnings expectations doesn’t mean the stock price will necessarily rise. If the market has already priced in the most optimistic outcome, even excellent results may only draw a “Hmm, not bad.”
Conversely, if management provides sufficiently strong forward guidance, even a slight shortfall in one metric could rekindle market enthusiasm.
Remember: companies report earnings, but stock prices are tested against expectations.
