What’s the biggest headache in the chip industry? It’s not a lack of customers, but customers lining up while factories can’t produce chips fast enough.
SK Hynix’s latest financial report shows that revenue topped 100 trillion won in the third quarter of 2026, with operating profit hitting a quarterly record. The company also believes that, due to rising demand for AI infrastructure, the growing complexity of advanced processes, and the long lead time for building new factories, global memory supply shortages could persist until 2030.
Doesn’t that sound exciting? It’s as if anyone holding chips can just sit back and make money for the next few years.
But the business world isn’t that simple.
A chip factory isn’t a rice cooker at home—you can’t just press a button and start shipping products. From construction and equipment installation to process validation and yield improvement, every step takes time and massive investment. No matter how many orders customers place, capacity can’t double overnight.
Meanwhile, competitors such as Samsung and Micron won’t just sit back and watch. Everyone is vying for the AI memory market, and whoever can improve technology, lower costs, and ensure reliable deliveries first will have a better chance of winning orders.
More importantly, a shortage through 2030 is a company’s assessment of the future market, not a script that’s already been written. If AI investment cools or new capacity comes online all at once, the market landscape could change.
So investors should recognize the growth opportunities in high-end memory while also being wary of mistaking a cyclical industry for a perpetual motion machine.
After all, chips can run at high speed, but stock prices don’t necessarily keep climbing. The truly savvy look beyond how hot things are today and ask whether companies can stay competitive tomorrow.
