What’s the biggest mistake when reading financial reports? Looking only at the headline and ignoring the details.
SK hynix delivered impressive results in the third quarter of 2026: revenue of 104.62 trillion won, up 32% quarter over quarter; operating profit of 83.33 trillion won, up 38%. Both metrics hit quarterly records.
However, another set of figures is also worth noting: net profit was 39.78 trillion won, down about 58% from 93.92 trillion won in the second quarter.
Does this mean the company suddenly ran into trouble? Don’t rush to conclusions.
Second-quarter net profit was boosted by non-operating factors, including investment gains related to Kioxia, giving it a high base. So the third-quarter decline in net profit cannot simply be equated with a deterioration in its core business. On the contrary, continued record operating profit better reflects the performance of its core memory chip business.
It’s like someone who received an unexpected investment gain on top of their salary last quarter; getting a smaller bonus this quarter doesn’t mean their work performance suddenly declined.
Of course, record operating profit doesn’t mean there are no risks ahead. Demand for AI servers, the HBM4 mass-production timeline, competitors’ capacity expansions, and capital expenditures will all affect future results.
SK hynix has announced plans to expand capacity and expects investment to increase significantly in the future. Orders are good news, but expanding capacity takes serious money, and market demand must continue to keep pace.
So the most valuable takeaway from this report is this: when assessing a chip company, don’t focus only on whether net profit is up or down, and don’t let record revenue go to your head.
The strength of the core business, the adequacy of cash flow, and the effectiveness of future investments are what matter when evaluating a company.
Numbers tell a story, but those who understand them won’t be easily swept along by it.
