Bitcoin loves a story, U.S. stocks love growth, and gold is more down-to-earth: show me real yields, and I’ll decide whether to shine.
After tomorrow’s FOMC decision is announced, what matters most for the gold market is not just whether the Fed adjusts interest rates, but how its policy guidance affects the dollar and real yields.
Typically, if the Fed signals a dovish stance, the market lowers its expectations for future interest rates, real yields fall, and the opportunity cost of holding gold declines, potentially supporting gold prices. If the dollar weakens at the same time, gold could get an extra boost.
But gold isn’t a “safe-haven sure thing” that only goes up. If Powell stresses that inflation remains stubborn and rates need to stay high for longer, a stronger dollar and higher real yields could weigh on gold prices.
There’s another possibility: geopolitical risks suddenly heat up. Even if the Fed is hawkish, safe-haven buying could still support gold. In that case, it wouldn’t be surprising for gold and risk assets to move in opposite directions.
More concerningly, the market may have already priced in expectations for monetary easing. If the decision brings no more dovish surprise, gold could see a “sell-the-news” reaction, leaving those who chased the rally stuck at the top.
So don’t assume that rate cuts mean buying gold and rate hikes mean selling it. What really determines short-term moves is the combined force of real yields, the dollar, and safe-haven demand.
The fundamental logic behind gold isn’t guessing what the Fed will do, but judging whether holding cash and bonds is becoming more or less attractive.$IRYS
