In the past, trading gold meant taking your cues from the market; now, the market may have to take its cues from you!
Gate announced the launch of the first $XAUUSD gold/USD CFD 7×23-hour trading service, with a beta test now open to select customers. What's the biggest highlight? You can open and close positions on weekends, too! Gold trading is finally getting a bit of a crypto feel—you no longer have to wait for traditional markets to open before taking action.
At first glance, this may seem like just an extension of trading hours, but it could signal a bigger shift in the industry.
First, demand for trading gold doesn't simply disappear when markets close on Friday. Geopolitical developments, economic data, breaking news—which of these will schedule itself in advance with the market? If a major event happens over the weekend, investors naturally want more opportunities to adjust their positions.
Second, 7×23-hour trading may attract crypto users who are used to watching the markets around the clock. In the past, they watched BTC swing up and down over the weekend; now gold may have a chance to join this round-the-clock contest.
But don't celebrate just yet. Longer trading hours don't mean liquidity will always be sufficient, nor do they guarantee more reasonable prices on weekends. Wide spreads, slippage, and sudden market moves could teach investors that “opportunities come quickly, and so do the tuition bills.”
My view: What makes Gate's move worth watching isn't just the addition of a few trading hours, but its attempt to bring traditional asset trading into a more flexible digital trading experience.
Whether it becomes an industry standard remains to be seen—it will depend on user demand, trading quality, and whether other platforms follow suit.
Gold is starting to compete on trading hours. Do you think oil and stock indexes will be next to join the around-the-clock trading model?
