Trump's approval rating is recovering, while Democrats still lead in overall congressional election polling, adding more suspense to the market's political drama. But investors who watch polling curves every day are like stock traders who follow trending topics but ignore earnings reports: they get plenty of excitement, but may not grasp the direction.
Midterm elections could affect the market through three channels.
First, taxes and corporate earnings. If policy changes companies' tax burdens or operating costs, it could affect earnings forecasts and stock valuations. The market isn't trading on policy slogans, but on how much room policies ultimately leave for profits.
Second, regulation and sector divergence. Different policy approaches could set technology, finance, energy and other sectors on different paths. The crypto industry should pay particular attention to digital asset regulation, stablecoin rules and the environment for institutional participation. Policy expectations can drive market moves, but implementation takes time.
Third, fiscal policy and the macro environment. Changes in fiscal policy could affect economic growth, Treasury supply and interest rate expectations, which could then feed through to the dollar, U.S. stock valuations and risk appetite for crypto assets. However, this chain isn't a simple cause-and-effect relationship; markets are also influenced by inflation, central bank policy and global capital flows.
So midterm elections could indeed become a market factor in the next phase, but they may not be the only protagonist. My advice: don't treat the elections as a crystal ball for predicting market moves; treat them as a radar for tracking policy changes.
After all, the market is best at suddenly changing the ending just when you think you've figured out the script.
