If the U.S. midterm elections were a big reality show, Trump would create the buzz, the Democrats would add suspense, and Wall Street would sit in front of the screen calculating: when this episode ends, will my stocks fall?
The Democrats maintain a lead in overall congressional election polls, while Trump’s approval rating has recently rebounded, making it hard for the market to bet in advance on the final political landscape. What really gives investors a headache is the possibility that the election results could change the scope for future policymaking.
If the balance of power in Congress shifts, tax adjustments, the federal budget, and the regulatory agenda could all face new rounds of political wrangling. For businesses, policy affects profits; for investors, profits affect valuations. So seemingly distant political news can take a few twists and turns before showing up as red and green numbers on a trading app.
The same goes for U.S. stocks and crypto markets. Regulatory signals, stablecoin rules, and expectations for digital asset legislation could all affect industry valuations and institutional appetite for participation. However, positive expectations don’t mean an immediate rally; sometimes the market even sees the awkward scenario of “buy the rumor, sell the news.”
So I’m more inclined to see the midterm elections as a volatility amplifier for the market, rather than a starting gun for a one-way move. Truly savvy investors won’t just guess who will win; they’ll also study what the winner can do afterward. After all, Washington handles the voting, Wall Street handles the math, and retail investors are most afraid of watching the spectacle without checking the bill. $SHELL
