What’s the word most likely to ignite discussion when an AI company enters the capital markets?
Not code, not model parameters, but valuation.
After news emerged that Anthropic may pursue a U.S. IPO, the market naturally wants to know: How much is an AI company in the midst of fierce competition actually worth? Should it be valued based on current revenue, or priced according to the market it might capture in the future?
Those two methods could produce results from entirely different universes.
If you look only at traditional financial metrics, a tech company with huge R&D spending and profitability yet to be proven may not easily secure a satisfying valuation. But from a long-term perspective, AI could transform how software development, enterprise services, and knowledge work operate, making it easy for the market to price future growth into today’s share price.
And so we get a classic capital markets moment: the company is still working to build its business empire, while investors are already calculating what property in that empire will be worth once it’s built.
However, the higher the expectations, the less room there tends to be for error.
If revenue growth exceeds expectations after listing, its customer base continues to expand, and cost controls gradually improve, the market may be willing to give it a higher valuation premium. Conversely, if growth slows, competition intensifies, or commercialization fails to keep pace with spending, even the most compelling AI story could face a repricing.
It’s worth emphasizing that IPO rumors, formal filings, setting an offering price, and completing a listing are different stages. Market reports should not be treated as confirmation that a listing has already taken place. The specific offering timeline and financial data should still be verified against regulatory filings and official company disclosures.
In my view, what makes an Anthropic listing worth watching is not just how high a price it can fetch, but how much of a premium the public markets are willing to pay for AI’s future—and what results will be needed to fulfill those expectations.
The stock market can put a high price on dreams, but dreams ultimately have to pay with results. Valuation can take flight for a while, but the financial statements will eventually bring it back down to earth. $AAVE
