#韩国KOSPI涨超4% #Gate广场万圣节 South Korean stocks surged to a circuit breaker! But don’t celebrate just yet: this rally looks more like an oversold rebound at first, and only later might it turn into a renewed uptrend.
There is still no sustained increase in trading volume, return of foreign investors, or earnings confirmation, so it’s too early to call a reversal.
Why this rally looks more like a recovery
· The drop was too fast: KOSPI fell about 35%–40% from its June high at one point, with tech stocks dropping even more. After short-term selling pressure is released all at once, bargain hunters and short-covering can easily amplify a rebound.
· Valuations are already very cheap: KOSPI’s forward P/E is about 4x, while Samsung and SK hynix are at around 3x. The market has already priced in a very pessimistic outlook, so even a slight improvement in sentiment can quickly lift share prices.
· Fundamentals have not deteriorated in tandem: Earnings expectations for Korean companies are still being revised upward, and semiconductor demand also provides support.
On October 21, KOSPI rose nearly 4.4%, while Samsung and SK hynix both gained more than 7%.
Three things to watch to see if this turns into a renewed uptrend
· Earnings quality: HBM orders, pricing trends, and profit guidance from Samsung and SK hynix are most critical. Their earnings reports will be important indicators going forward.
· Whether inflows persist: The previous decline was mainly driven by foreign investors reducing their tech holdings. For the rebound to continue, watch whether foreign selling eases and buyers step in.
· Whether AI investment pays off: The market remains concerned that cloud providers’ AI capital spending is high and returns are slow.
U.S. Treasury yields and corporate financing costs will also continue to affect tech stock valuations.
My view is that, in the short term, this is a “rapid correction after a sharp plunge,” driven mainly by valuation recovery and easing selling pressure; there is hope of a renewed uptrend in the medium term, but it is more likely to be a choppy climb than a one-way bull market.
For now, watch Samsung and SK hynix’s earnings reports, as well as foreign investor flows. Strong earnings and an end to foreign selling would create the conditions for an “oversold rebound” to develop into a “trend recovery”; if the index surges while leading stocks lag, it should still be viewed as a recovery rally.
