U.S. stocks have a rough week ahead: investors are waiting to hear from the Fed, watching U.S. GDP and PCE, and digesting earnings from tech giants. It’s like finishing a math exam only to have the teacher announce that English, physics, and the final report card are all due at once!
If the Fed strikes a dovish tone and inflation comes in milder than expected, hopes for looser policy could flare up again, giving growth and tech stocks some breathing room. But if GDP is much stronger than expected and PCE refuses to cool, interest rates could stay elevated for longer, forcing richly valued stocks to face reality.
More importantly, a strong economy isn’t necessarily good for stocks: robust growth can support corporate earnings, but it can also cool rate-cut expectations. What the market wants is for the economy to avoid recession while inflation keeps falling—a wish that may be the greediest of all for us adults.
My view: U.S. stocks may see sector divergence first, with tech stocks especially worth watching. Don’t just look at whether the indexes rise or fall; keep an eye on trading volume, leading stocks, and rate expectations.
The stock market doesn’t fear bad grades most—it fears getting decent grades, only for the teacher to assign even more homework.
