Many people rush to buy gold whenever a major macro event comes along, as if the price automatically gets a boost whenever world leaders meet. Unfortunately, the market isn't so easily swayed. This week, what really matters for gold is the dollar, real interest rates, and the Fed's policy signals.
If the Fed signals a dovish tilt, or PCE comes in below expectations and bond yields fall, the opportunity cost of holding gold could decline, giving prices a chance to find support. Conversely, if inflation remains stubborn and GDP is strong, and the market thinks rates will have to stay high, a stronger dollar and rising yields could put pressure on gold.
Of course, safe-haven demand can't be ignored either. If a sudden risk event boosts safe-haven sentiment, gold could attract additional buying; but if the dollar also surges, the two forces could pull against each other.
My view: Gold is likely to be highly sensitive to surprises in the Fed's signals and PCE this week, but you shouldn't bet on which way it will make a big move based on gut feeling alone. Watch how the dollar and U.S. Treasury yields move together after the data releases, then see whether gold follows.
Gold isn't a universal shield. When markets play rough, a gold bar won't stop you out.
