If you want to experience an emotional roller coaster, you don't need to go to an amusement park—just keep an eye on your holdings on earnings night.
Before a company reports its results, investors are full of hope: revenue will beat expectations, profits will hit a record high, and management will be brimming with confidence. But once the numbers come out, the stock may rise and then fall—or even plunge after hours. You stare at the screen questioning your life, while company executives may be celebrating another strong quarter.
Why? Because the market doesn't just look at the results; it also cares about how they compare with expectations.
Before earnings, a stock may have already risen, with most of the good news priced in. When the positive news finally arrives, investors may instead choose to take profits. Another scenario is even more dramatic: profits beat expectations, but revenue isn't impressive enough; or this quarter is very strong, but next quarter's guidance leaves investors feeling deflated.
So the most dangerous thing to do on earnings night is turn investing into a coin toss: bet on the results, bet on after-hours moves, bet that someone will step in and buy the next day.
A more rational approach is to research market expectations, valuation levels, and key operating metrics in advance, while leaving room for unexpected volatility. If an earnings report is hard to understand, consider waiting for the market to digest the information before making a decision, rather than rushing in during the first minute.
After all, an after-hours surge doesn't mean you'll be able to buy at that price, and an after-hours plunge doesn't mean the stock will definitely rebound tomorrow.
What earnings season really tests isn't your reaction speed, but your discipline. The market opens every day; there's no need to chase every firework.
