If global financial markets were a mahjong table, the dollar would be the player who could change the game at any moment. When the Fed speaks, gold, stocks, and crypto assets may all adjust their strategies.
The dollar faces three key tests this week: what the Fed says, how strong the U.S. economy is, and whether inflation has actually come down.
If the Fed remains wary of inflation, GDP is strong, and PCE comes in above expectations, the market may conclude that interest rates need to stay high for longer. This could support the dollar while putting pressure on gold and some higher-risk assets.
Conversely, if inflation eases and economic growth cools, the market may once again bet on future easing. The dollar could lose some of its interest-rate advantage, giving gold and risk assets room to breathe.
But don’t assume that a stronger dollar means every asset will fall. Markets sometimes price things in early, and the actual announcement can trigger a reversal. Recently, markets have also been closely watching central bank policy guidance, not just whether rates change.
My take: If we’re asking who is most likely to be the “behind-the-scenes director” of the market this week, the dollar deserves a top spot. But if we’re asking which market will see a big move first, that depends on positioning and how actual news compares with expectations.
Trading isn’t about guessing what central banks are thinking; it’s about watching whether the market applauds or throws its glass after hearing them.
