U.S. tech stocks are rocketing! Is getting in now a chance to profit, or are you just helping others cash out?
Every earnings season, tech stocks manage to send investors on an emotional roller coaster. When results beat expectations, investors proclaim a bright future; when guidance is even slightly cautious, the comments section turns into a full-blown wave of skepticism.
But when deciding whether a tech stock is worth buying, you can’t just look at how strong the company is—you also need to consider how much the market has already paid for that strength.
For example, a company with strong growth and leading technology is certainly worth watching. But if its share price has already priced in years of rapid growth, even solid earnings could send the stock down if they don’t deliver an even bigger surprise.
It’s like paying mansion prices for an ordinary apartment: you move in and find it’s a nice place, but you may not feel like you got a bargain.
During earnings season, I focus on three questions: First, is revenue growth real and sustainable? Second, can profits and free cash flow keep up? Third, does the current valuation leave room for future uncertainty?
Of course, a high valuation doesn’t mean a stock will definitely fall, and a low valuation doesn’t mean it will rebound right away. Industry prospects, the competitive landscape, and interest rate changes can all affect how much the market is willing to pay.
My view is this: don’t chase a stock just because it’s popular, and don’t assume it’s cheap just because it’s fallen. What’s really worth studying is the relationship between future growth and the current price.
Buying takes analysis, holding takes patience, and when you’re losing money, don’t just blame the market for not understanding you!
