For thousands of years, people have dreamed of turning ordinary metals into gold. What once sounded like an impossible experiment from ancient alchemy is now back in the spotlight, after US-based fusion startup Marathon Fusion claimed it had demonstrated a process capable of converting mercury into gold.$XAUUSD
The story is fascinating, but the bigger question is whether this technology could ever change the global gold market.
How Can Mercury Become Gold?
The process is known as nuclear transmutation. Unlike traditional chemical reactions, which rearrange atoms without changing their identity, nuclear transmutation changes the structure of an atom's nucleus.
Marathon Fusion's proposed process uses neutrons produced by nuclear fusion. These neutrons can interact with mercury-198, producing mercury-197, which can subsequently decay into stable gold-197.
In simple terms, the goal is to use nuclear physics to create an element that would otherwise require mining from the Earth.
Gold is not being created from nothing. The process changes one element into another by altering its atomic nucleus, something modern nuclear science has already demonstrated in other experimental settings.
Why Is This News Attracting Attention?
Marathon Fusion has explored gold production as a potential additional benefit of future fusion power plants. The company previously presented projections suggesting that a sufficiently large fusion facility could potentially produce more than two tonnes of gold annually.
That figure, however, is a theoretical projection rather than verified commercial production.
Reports published in October 2026 describe the company's claim that it demonstrated gold conversion experimentally. Yet the exact quantity produced, the recovery efficiency and the full economics of the process remain critical questions. Independent scientific verification will be essential before the claim can be treated as an established commercial breakthrough.
Could This Change Gold Prices?
This is where the story becomes particularly interesting for investors.
Gold prices depend on many factors, including central-bank purchases, interest rates, inflation expectations, geopolitical uncertainty and the balance between supply and demand.
If nuclear technology eventually makes large-scale gold production economically viable, it could introduce a new source of supply and challenge the traditional economics of gold mining.
But there is a huge difference between producing microscopic quantities in a laboratory and manufacturing tonnes of commercially usable gold at competitive prices.
Fusion reactors themselves remain technologically challenging, while isotope enrichment, radioactive by-products, purification and operating costs could all affect the final price.
For now, there is no solid basis to conclude that this development will cause gold prices to collapse.
The Bigger Picture
The most important part of this story may not be the gold itself. It is the possibility that future fusion facilities could generate electricity while also producing valuable materials as a secondary output.
If the technology proves technically reliable and commercially competitive, it could open an entirely new direction for the nuclear energy industry.
For now, Marathon Fusion's claim deserves attention, but also careful scientific scrutiny.
Humanity has learned how to change the atomic identity of matter. The real challenge is whether we can do it safely, efficiently and cheaply enough to make economic sense.
What do you think? Could laboratory-produced gold eventually disrupt the traditional gold market, or will the cost of nuclear technology keep this idea far from commercial reality?#SpotGoldFallsBelow$4000 #USEarningsSeason
