What do stock investors fear most? Not a company losing money, but a company making money while its stock refuses to cooperate.
Meta put on exactly that kind of show this time. Third-quarter revenue rose 26% year over year to $64.6 billion—a pretty impressive result at first glance. But on October 22, the stock plunged more than 7%. Even a TV drama wouldn’t dare write a plot like this!
The reason is no mystery: the market is watching not just revenue, but also how much the company will have to spend in the future. Meta is investing heavily in AI, raising its full-year capital expenditure outlook to $135 billion to $145 billion. AI could certainly create new growth, but servers, chips, and data centers won’t be delivered for free just because the company has big dreams.
Investors are worried about whether the huge sums being spent today can turn into real profits tomorrow.
There’s an important distinction here: **a good company doesn’t mean buying its stock at any price is a good investment.** When the stock price already reflects too much optimism, even a little cost pressure can make the market run the numbers again.
My view is, don’t focus only on one day’s gains or losses. Pay closer attention to changes in ad revenue, profit margins, and capital expenditures. The stock market isn’t an awards ceremony, and even strong results don’t necessarily win you a limit-up trophy.
If you own Meta, are you more concerned about its AI prospects or its ever-rising investment costs?
