The Most Painful Truth Behind Meta’s Plunge: No Matter How Big the AI Story, Someone Has to Pay for It!
What is the AI era not short of? Grand visions. What keeps investors up at night? The increasingly hefty bill behind those visions.
Meta is ramping up its AI bets. Third-quarter revenue grew 26% year over year, showing its core business remains strong. But the company also raised its full-year capital expenditure outlook and announced the creation of a new Class C share class. After the news, investors began reassessing the funding needs and return risks of this all-in bet. [1][2]
It’s like opening a thriving restaurant, then deciding to expand the kitchen into a food-tech center of the future. More and more customers are coming in, but renovation, equipment, and R&D costs are soaring too. Business is good, but the question is: When will the expansion pay for itself?
So what’s worth paying attention to in Meta’s latest decline isn’t simply that “AI is no longer working.” It’s that the market’s valuation logic is changing: Investors used to be willing to pay a premium for growth; now they also want to see what that growth costs.
My view is that Meta’s long-term opportunity is still worth watching, but more AI investment isn’t automatically better. The real winner won’t be the company that spends the most, but the one that turns its technological edge into sustained profits.
Of course, the stock price is also affected by market sentiment in the short term, and one sharp drop alone isn’t enough to declare a trend reversal.
If AI is a marathon, do you think Meta is sprinting ahead of schedule, or running too fast and forgetting to check its stamina bar?
