On October 23, spot gold fell below $4,000 per ounce intraday, hitting its lowest level in several months. More surprisingly, despite rising safe-haven sentiment, gold prices did not keep climbing.
The key clue lies in oil prices.
Rising oil prices add to inflationary pressure. If the market therefore believes the Federal Reserve will need to keep interest rates high for longer, dollar assets and Treasury yields could be supported. Gold itself pays no interest, so when returns on other assets become more attractive, some funds will naturally shift back to them.
