Tesla’s Q3 profit plunged 43%! How did Elon Musk’s money-making machine suddenly “stumble”?

Tesla used to give people the impression that whenever Musk spoke, its stock could take off; whenever it unveiled new technology, the market was eager to imagine the future. But in the third quarter of 2026, its earnings report poured cold water on enthusiastic investors: net profit fell 43% year over year to just $787 million.
Even more striking, revenue was about $28.05B, almost unchanged from the same period last year. Simply put, the scale of the business hasn’t shrunk much, but the money it brought in fell sharply. It’s like a restaurant with roughly the same number of customers and little change in sales, only for the owner to find at the end of the month that profit margins are paper-thin.
Where did things go wrong? On the one hand, research and operating expenses continue to rise, and projects such as AI and autonomous driving require real money. On the other hand, automotive revenue fell 3% year over year, while deliveries also declined by about 2%. New businesses are still growing, while the old business has yet to provide stronger profit support.
Of course, a decline in profit alone isn’t enough to conclude that Tesla is in trouble. The company’s gross margin recovered to 19.6%, and adjusted earnings per share also beat market expectations, showing that the earnings report wasn’t all bad news.
What’s truly worth watching is that Tesla is spending more money telling the story of the future, but still needs to prove that the future can translate into profits.
For investors, the story is worth hearing, but the books deserve closer attention. After all, dreams are what send the stock soaring, while cash flow is what keeps the company grounded.
