What does Gate’s 118.49% reserve ratio mean? Crypto’s “sense of security” finally has a number!

There’s a curious phenomenon in crypto: when the market is rising, everyone’s Warren Buffett; when it’s falling, everyone turns into a bank risk manager.
Recently, Gate released a reserve report that’s hard not to take a second look at: as of October 18, total reserves reached $8.69B, with an overall reserve ratio of 118.49%, up further from 117.26% in the previous report.
So what does this number actually mean?
Simply put, based on the methodology disclosed in the report, for every $100 in customers’ net assets on the platform, there are about $118.49 in reserve assets. It’s like cooking for 10 people but preparing a little extra food—in terms of balance-sheet coverage, at least, there’s a bigger cushion.
But keep in mind, that doesn’t mean the excess can be spent freely, nor does it insure investment returns.
This report also covers 500 crypto assets, with BTC reserves at 121.60% and ETH at 123.78%. That means you shouldn’t look only at the overall figure when assessing reserves; coverage for each individual asset matters too.
My view is that a rising reserve ratio is a positive sign, but a real sense of security can’t rest on a single percentage. Transparency in verification, how quickly assets can be mobilized, and whether risk management can withstand market stress all need to be considered together.
After all, the most expensive thing in crypto often isn’t the purchase price, but the tuition you pay for choosing the wrong platform.
When choosing a trading platform, do you look at its reserve ratio first, or its reputation and withdrawal experience? Share your thoughts in the comments. $SPCX
