#特斯拉Q3财报 #兄每周来晒 Tesla's Q3 earnings report is due after the close tomorrow: the delivery hurdle is behind it, but the real "test" is gross margin and whether there's anything "new to say" about Robotaxi
My take: The odds of a beat are roughly 50/50—better-than-expected deliveries were announced on October 2 and have long been priced in; tomorrow, the real deciding factors are two things: ① whether gross margin holds; ② whether there's anything "new to say" about Robotaxi/FSD.
For the stock: This is an "either a triumph or a crash" earnings report—because the P/E is still a lofty 187x. The market isn't looking at the "numbers"; it's looking to see whether the "story has been upgraded."
I. Will Q3 earnings beat expectations?—Breaking it down into three tests: "volume, profitability, and narrative"
First test: Volume (passed). Deliveries of 486.5k vehicles, 4.9% above expectations—the positive news that "EV sales have stabilized" has already been priced in (announced on 10/2, and the stock has already rallied). This is no longer a "surprise."
Second test: Profitability (uncertain). This is the biggest unknown:
- Bloomberg expects EPS of just $0.23 (-40% YoY) and net income of $1.55 billion (-13%)—profits are shrinking
- JPMorgan says gross margin will be 18% in 2026-27, with EBIT margins of just 1.3%-1.1%, recovering only in 2028—"better-than-expected deliveries won't ease the pressure on profitability"
- Capital expenditures are set to exceed $25 billion this year—spending more means betting on the future, but it also weighs on current profits
- My take: EPS estimates ranging from $0.23 to $0.43 have investors arguing, which shows that "the market itself has no clear view"—high disagreement means high volatility. Gross margin holding above 18% = a beat; falling below = a miss. It's that simple.
Third test: Narrative (the real exam). Robotaxi is Tesla's most important stock catalyst—the market wants something "new," not what it "already knows."
II. Robotaxi: What cards does Tesla have, and can it play a new one tomorrow?
Cards already played (known to the market):
- The Austin Cybercab fleet grew 8x in 30 days, surpassed 300 vehicles, and logged over 1 million miles without human supervision
- Now operating in Austin, Dallas, and Houston, with a goal of expanding to around 12 states by year-end; no fatalities to date
- Commercialization is on the horizon, but utilization, safety, and unit economics still need to be validated
What to watch for as "new cards" tomorrow:
- A list of new city launches (a step beyond the "12-state target"?)
- A new figure for miles driven without human supervision (1 million → several million?)
- Unit economics data (cost/revenue per unit)—the key step in turning a "story" into a "business"
- FSD V15 timeline, Optimus mass-production progress
My take: If the earnings report just repeats the old line ("making progress"), the market will be disappointed—"buy the rumor, sell the news" will continue; if it provides new milestones (new cities, doubled mileage, improved unit economics), the stock will have the most upside. Robotaxi is a "story," not "current profits"—whether the stock rises tomorrow depends on whether the "narrative has been upgraded," not the earnings numbers themselves.
III. Three scenarios: What happens after the close tomorrow
Scenario A: Beat (gross margin ≥18% + new Robotaxi/FSD milestones)—roughly 35% probability
Up 5-10% after hours, $TSLAX follows, and Roadster hype gets a new lease on life—"double boost" (both earnings and narrative improve)
Scenario B: In line with expectations (deliveries already priced in, lackluster earnings, nothing new on Robotaxi)—roughly 40% probability
"Buy the rumor, sell the news" continues (we just saw it on the day the Roadster was announced: opened higher, then fell 2.13%)—retreat to the $340-$350 range, and Roadster hype officially fades
Scenario C: Miss (gross margin below 17% + alarming capex + no new narrative)—roughly 25% probability
Down 5%+, retesting $330—a lofty 187x P/E plus shrinking profits means a double hit
My take: The stock has already rebounded 20% from its low (some expectations have been priced in early)—the upside from a "beat" is limited, while the odds of "buy the rumor, sell the news" are greater. Chasing before earnings offers poor risk-reward; wait until after the report to take a position based on gross margin and Robotaxi.
IV. Conclusion
Tesla has passed the Q3 "volume" test (better-than-expected deliveries); "profitability" remains uncertain (EPS estimates range from $0.23 to $0.43, nearly a twofold gap, and JPMorgan says profits will be under pressure until 2028); the "narrative" is the real exam (is there anything new to say about Robotaxi?). The odds of a beat are roughly 50/50, but the stock has already rebounded 20%—the risk of "buy the rumor, sell the news" outweighs the chance of a positive surprise. After the close tomorrow, look at gross margin first, then Robotaxi, and only then your position.
Roadster hype, rumors of a SpaceX merger, and the grand Robotaxi narrative—all will be put to the test by "one earnings report" tomorrow. No matter how well the story is told, someone still has to pay for the profits.
