#美股财报 Tech earnings relay: Of the four stocks, LRCX is most likely to beat expectations, NFLX is the steadiest, TSLA is the biggest gamble, and WDC is the most precarious

NFLX reports after market close tomorrow (10/20), TSLA and LRCX after market close Wednesday (10/21), and WDC has already reported a blowout quarter (revenue +44%, EPS +1125%, gross margin 54.1%).
My take: My pick for “most likely to beat expectations” is LRCX (the shovels seller for the memory expansion cycle); my pick for “most likely to rise after earnings” is NFLX (a safe haven amid macro headwinds); TSLA is the biggest gamble (either a triumph or a collapse); WDC is the most precarious (high base + headwinds for the memory sector).
“Beating expectations” ≠ “the stock goes up”—in the current environment of rate-hike expectations and cooling AI narratives, even good earnings can be undone by “selling the news.”

I. Breaking down the four stocks
① LRCX (Lam Research, after market close 10/21)—probability of beating expectations: high
- The “shovels seller” for semiconductor equipment: Etching and deposition equipment are essential for memory and logic expansion—the memory Big Three (SK hynix, Samsung, and Micron) are expanding HBM/DRAM capacity, and equipment makers are the first to benefit
- The company has already raised its 2026 equipment spending outlook, and EPS is expected to rise 22% next year—the direction of earnings growth is clear
- Risk: The semiconductor sector was just hammered by “cooling AI narratives” (memory stocks have fallen for consecutive sessions)—beating expectations ≠ rising; it could be a case of “good earnings, bad stock performance” (selling the news)
② NFLX (Netflix, after market close tomorrow, 10/20)—probability of beating expectations: medium-high (the steadiest pick)
- Clear full-year guidance: revenue of $51-51.4 billion, a 31.5% margin, and advertising revenue of about $3 billion (doubling year over year)—advertising is the biggest upside driver
- “Defensive growth” amid macro headwinds: essential subscriptions + ad growth—funds will seek shelter in it in a rate-hike environment—even a slight miss would likely mean a limited decline; a beat would make a rise more likely
- My take: Of the four, it’s the one “most likely to rise after earnings”—expectations are modest, its core business is solid, and it has safe-haven qualities
③ TSLA (Tesla, after market close 10/21)—probability of beating expectations: medium-low (the biggest gamble)
- Bad news has been priced in: shares opened higher and then fell 2.13% on the day the Roadster was unveiled, P/E of 187, down 18% this year
- Good news was priced in early: Q3 deliveries of 486,000 were disclosed in early October—the market already knows, so it’s no longer a surprise
- The only “surprise switches”: gross margin, cash flow, Robotaxi/FSD progress, and Roadster order numbers—if any deliver, the stock could soar; if not, it could keep falling—whether the Roadster buzz can keep it alive depends on this earnings report
- My take: It’s the most volatile of the four—not a question of the “probability of beating expectations,” but of the “room for an expectations gap”: get the bet right and it’s a triumph; get it wrong and the stock gets cut in half. Position size must be controlled
④ WDC (Western Digital)—probability of beating expectations: low (the most precarious)
- Its last earnings report was already a blowout: revenue +44%, GAAP EPS +1125%, gross margin 54.1%—the bar has been raised too high, and the market’s appetite has grown
- Headwinds: The memory sector is being weighed down by “cooling AI narratives + a steep semiconductor selloff in Japan and South Korea” (the week SK hynix fell 11% and SanDisk fell 5%)—sentiment in the sector is poor
- My take: Of the four, it will be the hardest to “beat expectations again”—even if the numbers aren’t bad, sector headwinds + high expectations make it “easier to fall than rise”

II. Ranking and rationale
- Probability of beating expectations: LRCX ≈ NFLX > TSLA > WDC
- Most likely to rise after earnings: NFLX > LRCX > TSLA > WDC
- Most worth “betting on”: TSLA (high reward, high risk)
- Most worth “holding steady with”: NFLX (low volatility, steady gains)
Core logic: LRCX benefits from the “expansion cycle” (industry beta), NFLX from “its own growth” (company alpha), TSLA from “narrative-driven expectations gaps” (Musk mystique), and WDC from “price-hike momentum” (late-cycle risk)—in the current environment (rate hikes + cooling AI narratives), “company alpha” is the most resilient, while “cyclical beta” is the most vulnerable.

III. Trading considerations
- For stability: Build a position in NFLX ahead of earnings (or wait for confirmation after earnings)—defensive qualities + the narrative of advertising doubling
- For upside: Wait for LRCX earnings before acting—a beat + stabilization in the sector could deliver a double boost; a beat + further sector declines could mean selling the news, so don’t catch the falling knife
- The gamble (TSLA): Only suitable for a small position—don’t take a large position before earnings; wait for gross margin and Robotaxi updates before picking a side
- Avoid the trap (WDC): High base + sector headwinds; don’t bet on “beating expectations again” ahead of earnings
- Discipline: “Beating expectations” is the company’s performance; “whether the stock rises” is the market’s mood—in a rate-hike environment, even the best earnings can’t withstand those four words: “selling the news”!

Conclusion
This week’s earnings relay: LRCX is most likely to beat expectations (the shovels seller for memory expansion), NFLX is the steadiest (defensive qualities + advertising doubling), TSLA is the biggest gamble (the expectations gap decides its fate), and WDC is the most precarious (high base + headwinds). But in a rate-hike environment, “beating expectations” doesn’t guarantee a rise—NFLX’s “stability,” TSLA’s “gamble,” LRCX’s “shovels,” WDC’s “precariousness”: whichever you choose, first ask yourself whether your position can withstand the volatility. #WCTCS9
