On this day six years ago, the Filecoin mainnet officially launched. As one of the most closely watched underlying networks in decentralized storage, it has now completed six full years of development. Molly Mackinlay (momack), a core Filecoin contributor, published a long post on social media reviewing the ecosystem’s major work in 2026 on product deployment and building demand-side capacity. As she said, six years is only the beginning of the journey, and the entire ecosystem is building at an accelerating pace.
I. Five Major Filecoin Ecosystem Milestones in 2026
This year, ecosystem development has focused on two main priorities: building storage products that generate real business revenue and continually driving genuine demand for network storage. The focus is no longer just on the underlying protocol, but on delivering usable commercial storage services for enterprises and AI developers.
1. filone | Foundation Launches S3-Compatible Managed Storage
Developed under the leadership of the Filecoin Foundation, filone is a managed, high-performance S3 storage service. Traditional public clouds (AWS, Alibaba Cloud, etc.) make extensive use of the S3 standard storage interface, and most enterprise and development teams build their business systems on S3.
filone’s core value is packaging the Filecoin decentralized storage network as an S3-compatible service. Enterprises can migrate data directly to the Filecoin network without substantially rewriting their code. Lowering the technical barrier for Web2 enterprises to adopt decentralized storage makes filone an important bridge connecting traditional cloud users with the Filecoin network.
2. _FilOz Team: Three Storage Products for the AI EraThe FilOz team launched three core storage services this year to meet data storage needs in AI use cases:
• Warm Storage: For data that needs to be accessed at any time, such as AI datasets, training data, and video libraries. It can be stored long-term on a decentralized network while also supporting fast, on-demand retrieval. Paid access is also supported, allowing data owners to sell access to their datasets.
• IPFS services: Package IPFS content-addressing capabilities as a standardized service, making it easy for developers to directly use CID content addressing and pin various files.
• Agent storage: A persistent memory layer purpose-built for AI coding agents and large-model agents. AI agents’ conversation histories, task records, and knowledge bases can be persistently stored on the Filecoin network without being lost when a session ends—in other words, as we discussed before, giving AI a decentralized long-term memory.
3. FIDL Project: Archival Large-Scale Archive StorageArchival storage developed by FIDL focuses on massive archives, research datasets, and historical materials. These data are stored once and rarely accessed, but must be kept reliably for an extremely long time. Archival storage is optimized for cold-data use cases and is suited to automated bulk storage of government archives, research projects, historical media assets, and massive offline datasets.
4. Integral Spacetime: Commercial Deployment Project for Real-World EnterprisesThe Integral Spacetime project has officially launched. It serves as a business development layer, aiming to engage enterprise customers with substantial data assets. Until now, the Filecoin ecosystem has primarily involved developers and storage miners. The project’s core mission is to convert enterprises holding massive amounts of real-world data into actual storage customers on the Filecoin network, bringing genuine business demand and paying users to the network and completing the path to commercial deployment.
5. Major Underlying Economic Shift: FIL + Mechanism Officially Ends, Giving Way to Revenue-Driven Subnet Economics
This is one of the most important underlying changes this year, delivered through joint work by _FilOz, the Filecoin Foundation, and developers across the ecosystem: the FIL + program, which had operated for years, has officially become a thing of the past. In the past, FIL + relied on computing-power subsidies to incentivize miners to store data, resulting in a large amount of data unrelated to real business needs and an unsustainable economic model. The new approach introduces revenue-based subnet economics.
Simply put, network incentives will no longer depend solely on storage capacity, but on whether storage services can generate real, paying revenue. Real business returns will drive the entire network, completing the economic flywheel of the Filecoin ecosystem and shifting the network from subsidy-dependent operations to a self-sustaining cycle powered by storage business revenue.
II. A New Product Matrix: Tiered Storage Covering Every Type of Data
The accompanying post image shows Filecoin’s new tiered storage product matrix, divided into five product lines to meet different access frequencies and business needs: • Warm Storage is for: AI training datasets, video libraries, and data that needs frequent on-demand retrieval.
Core capabilities: On-demand data retrieval; data owners can set paid access, so others pay based on the number of times they access the data. • Archival Storage is for: Long-term static archives, historical materials, and massive datasets accessed infrequently.
Core capabilities: High-capacity, low-cost, highly reliable long-term offline archiving.
• Agent Storage is for: AI agents and AI Agent projects.
Core capabilities: Persistent memory storage for AI agents, preserving their task data, knowledge bases, and interaction records.
• IPFS is for: File pinning and content addressing, generating a unique CID for file proof and content distribution.
Core capabilities: Content-hash-based addressing to ensure files cannot be tampered with.
• Enterprise Storage is for: Customized storage needs of large enterprise customers, with supporting enterprise services.
Related business use cases: AI training datasets, general-purpose datasets, and video libraries;
Supporting capabilities: On-demand retrieval and pay-per-use access. With products at different tiers, developers and enterprises can choose the most suitable storage solution based on how frequently they access their data.
III. Ecosystem Vision: Building Decentralized Infrastructure for Human Information
Developers and storage service providers across the ecosystem continue to invest in development, remaining committed to Filecoin’s founding mission: building decentralized, efficient, and robust underlying infrastructure to carry humanity’s information.
Over six years, the Filecoin network has completed the full cycle from concept and mainnet launch to productization and commercial exploration. But in her view, this is just the beginning, and ecosystem development is still accelerating.
IV. In-Depth Analysis: The Rationale Behind Filecoin’s Transformation on Its 6th Anniversary
The focus is shifting from computing-power growth to genuine storage demand. In the network’s early stages, most attention was on growth in effective computing power. In 2026, the entire ecosystem’s focus shifted to finding real paying customers and building usable storage products, so that real data and real business could run on the network.
Fully embracing the AI sectorAI generates massive datasets, model files, and agent memory data, making it the use case with the greatest storage demand. Warm Storage and Agent storage are both purpose-built for AI use cases, positioning Filecoin as the decentralized data foundation of the AI era.
The economic model is reinventing itself. Abolishing FIL + is a key underlying adjustment, abandoning the previous model of using subsidies to drive computing power. The new subnet economy uses real business revenue as its source of incentives, aiming to build an economic flywheel that can sustain itself over the long term.
Over six years, Filecoin has undergone a major transformation: from the storage mining network it was known as in its early days, it has gradually evolved into a tiered, multi-use-case decentralized storage infrastructure for enterprises and AI applications. On one side, it is building a tiered storage product matrix covering warm storage, archival storage, AI agent storage, and enterprise storage; on the other, it is changing the underlying economic rules, replacing the old FIL + incentive system with one driven by real business revenue.
For the entire ecosystem, the 6th anniversary is not the finish line, but a new starting point for entering the commercialization phase. $FIL
