US MEMORY STOCKS FACE A NEW TEST: CAN AI DEMAND OUTRUN GROWING COMPETITION?
The recent weakness in US memory and storage stocks has raised an important question for investors: Is the AI memory boom losing momentum, or is the market creating a potential opportunity after an extraordinary rally?
Micron Technology (MU), SanDisk (SNDK), Western Digital (WDC), and Seagate Technology (STX) are under pressure as investors reassess valuations, competition, and the sustainability of AI-driven growth. In my view, this correction is not simply about falling share prices. It is about whether future earnings can meet the market's increasingly ambitious expectations.
1. China's Memory Ambitions Create New Uncertainty
ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) has attracted attention following reports of progress in DRAM technology, including potential memory-density improvements of 30%–50% and plans to introduce server DDR5 products by the end of 2026.
These developments have increased concerns about future competition. On October 13, SK Hynix reportedly dropped more than 10%, Samsung Electronics fell approximately 7.4%, and South Korea's KOSPI declined around 5.5%.
However, technological progress does not immediately translate into large-scale commercial competition. Manufacturing yields, production capacity, customer qualification, and delivery volumes will determine the actual impact. Even so, investors may adjust valuations before these developments affect earnings.
2. Profit-Taking After Massive Gains
Micron reportedly gained around 191% year to date, while SanDisk's rally approached 893% at one point during the summer. Such extraordinary performance leaves these stocks vulnerable to corrections when sentiment changes.
Investors may be locking in profits while concerns about interest rates, AI financing, and hyperscaler spending create additional uncertainty. A strong industry outlook can coexist with falling share prices when expectations have become too optimistic.
3. Earnings Strength Versus Future Expectations
The supplied analysis cites Micron fiscal Q4 2026 revenue of approximately $54.23 billion and adjusted EPS of $33.42, alongside reported fiscal Q1 2027 guidance of $61.5 billion in revenue and $38.15 adjusted EPS.
These figures require verification against official company releases before publication. If confirmed, they would support the growth argument, but investors must also assess whether exceptional pricing and profitability can continue.
SanDisk's reported long-term agreements with eight data-center and edge customers, averaging over four years, and approximately $94 billion in minimum contractual revenue could provide visibility. Western Digital and Seagate may also benefit from growing demand for high-capacity storage as AI generates more data.
4. Important Technical Zones
Based on the reference levels in the supplied analysis, rather than independently verified live prices:
- Micron (MU): Initial support at $885, deeper support at $787, and resistance around $1,080–$1,150.
- SanDisk (SNDK): Initial support at $1,220, deeper support at $1,085, and resistance near $1,490.
Holding support could indicate stabilization, while a decisive breakdown may signal a deeper reassessment of the sector's growth outlook.
5. My Strategy and Market Outlook
I would avoid buying simply because prices have fallen. A stronger setup would involve stabilization, higher lows, improving volume, and confirmation of a recovery above resistance. Long-term investors may prefer gradual entries, while keeping leverage low and position sizes controlled.
The bullish scenario depends on firm DRAM and NAND pricing, sustained AI infrastructure spending, and rising earnings estimates. The bearish scenario includes faster Chinese competition, weaker memory prices, reduced cloud spending, or tighter financial conditions.
My Final View
The AI memory story is not necessarily over, but expectations are changing. Competition is increasing, valuations remain important, and strong earnings must translate into sustainable future growth.
For now, patience and confirmation matter more than predicting the exact bottom. I will watch memory pricing, company guidance, sector-wide momentum, and the key support zones before drawing stronger conclusions.
