Warsh's IMF remarks, South Korea's KOSPI rebounds: Can global risk appetite continue to recover?
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's remarks at an IMF-related meeting and the strong rebound in South Korean stocks have become the focus of global markets recently. Facing U.S. inflation pressures, Warsh did not explicitly signal whether rates would be raised in October, emphasizing instead that he would not prejudge the meeting's decision. He also expressed optimism about the long-term productivity gains from artificial intelligence.
South Korea's KOSPI also rebounded significantly. On October 16, the index rose as much as 3.31% intraday and closed up 2.05%, ending a seven-session losing streak. A recovery in chip stocks, dip buying, and a reassessment of Fed policy jointly drove the rebound. However, the KOSPI had plunged 7.57% in the previous session, underscoring that market volatility remains intense.
These two developments reflect how markets are seeking a new balance between inflation risks and economic resilience. If expectations for AI industry growth continue to improve and bond yields stabilize, tech stocks and crypto assets could benefit from a recovery in risk appetite. But if inflation continues to exceed expectations and interest rates remain high, the rebound may still face pressure. Next, investors should watch the Fed's October 27–28 meeting, U.S. inflation data, and the performance of South Korean tech stocks. The short-term rebound is worth watching, but whether it develops into a sustained rally will still depend on fundamentals and capital flows.
