BTC falls 0.62% in 24 hours, with $31.89 million in sell volume in the final hour
Gate spot BTC/USDT is currently quoted at 81285.5 USDT, down 0.62% over 24 hours, with a high of 81818.4 and a low of 80817.0. That 0.62% is almost negligible on the daily chart, but the final hourly candle was different: it opened at 81647.1, plunged to a low of 80817.0, and closed at 81124.9, with 31.89 million USDT in hourly trading volume—more than three times the previous hour’s approximately 8.71 million.
What I’m more interested in is whether this drop was accompanied by volume. Looking at the latest 48 hourly candles, volume peaks are concentrated in two places: one was the spike and pullback near 82925, with 58.01 million in volume; the other was the sell-off just now, with 31.89 million. As the price slid from 82925 to around 81200 in between, most hourly volumes were only 5 million to 15 million, a classic low-volume decline. In other words, the earlier drop wasn’t very decisive; the real selling pressure was concentrated in the final hour.
There are two ways to read this structure. The bearish view is that a high-volume breakdown after a low-volume decline means some investors chose to exit at this level, making repeated tests of the 80817 low quite likely. The bullish view is that despite the high-volume sell-off, the price rebounded to close at 81124.9 rather than at the low, suggesting there was support around 80800 and some of the panic selling was absorbed.
I currently lean toward the latter, but with one condition: volume needs to contract over the next few hours, while the price holds above 81000. If the price keeps falling on rising volume, that’s not support—it’s selling in waves. On Gate Futures, the funding rate is 0.0015% (8 hours), longs are still paying to hold positions, and open interest is about 2.05 billion USDT. The rate hasn’t turned negative, suggesting bullish sentiment hasn’t been shaken; this also means that if the price keeps falling, longs’ stop-loss orders could become the next wave of selling pressure.
Whether the 80817 low holds or breaks next is more informative than the -0.62% figure itself.
