On Friday during Asian trading, Bitcoin was trading at around $82,189, up 1.67% after buyers bought the brief dip to $79,800, which lasted about two hours. The rebound lifted it to a high of around $82,500. Asian stocks also recovered: South Korea’s Kospi rose nearly 3%. One market did not join the move: Treasury bonds gave back just one basis point of Thursday’s 13.6-basis-point rally amid a flight to safe assets.
Support level breached and recovered in a single trading session
Over the past week, Bitcoin held near $80,400 twice. On Thursday, it swiftly broke through that level and fell to $79,800.
Buyers returned almost immediately. Bitcoin spent about two hours below $80,000 and held above $81,000 for the rest of the Asian trading session.
A level that is breached and reclaimed within a few hours indicates something different from a level that is confidently held. Demand is real, but it is weaker than a week ago, and the $80,000 mark has now been tested three times in five sessions.
Treasury bonds—the dissenting voice
On Thursday, bonds rallied significantly: the 10-year yield fell 13.6 basis points, while 20- and 30-year yields fell by more than 14. On Friday, yields rose one basis point to 5.07%.
That erases about 7% of Thursday’s safe-haven demand. The remaining 93% remains.
Equity and crypto markets are pricing in a recovery. The bond market is pricing in the same concerns about economic growth as yesterday. Historically, when these two markets diverge in their assessments, it is worth watching the bond market: the shift into longer-term Treasuries reflected weaker growth expectations, not a change in Fed policy forecasts.
