U.S. September PPI far exceeds expectations, putting Fed rate cuts in doubt again
U.S. inflation has sounded another warning bell for markets! Data released on October 15 showed that U.S. PPI rose 1.3% month over month in September, far above market expectations of 0.5%; the year-over-year increase climbed to 6.3%, the highest level since December 2022. More notably, the index excluding food, energy and trade services still rose 0.5% month over month, indicating that price pressures are not entirely driven by energy.
What does this data mean? The rate-cut path the Fed may have been considering now faces greater headwinds. If producer prices continue to pass through to consumers, future CPI and PCE inflation could both be affected, making it difficult for policymakers to send dovish signals.
For markets, the key issue is not just one data release exceeding expectations, but whether inflation is once again entering a sustained upward trend. If employment and consumption remain resilient, the possibility that the Fed will keep rates high or even hike them further cannot be ignored.
Of course, a single month of data does not mean the trend has completely reversed. Energy price movements, core inflation and upcoming economic data still need to be watched.
What markets truly fear is that inflation will not come down, rate cuts will not arrive, and high rates will last even longer. For investors, managing position sizes and risk may be more important than rushing to bet on the next round of easing.$MU #美国9月PPI大超预期
