How can you identify a turning point in the current sideways market?
After trading for a while, you’ll gain an intuitive understanding: the market moves that deliver big returns are never the ones everyone feels comfortable entering.
If you want to capture an entire trend, there are basically two types of entry opportunities.
Either a decline has ended and market sentiment has hit rock bottom, with most people pessimistic and afraid to enter, so you choose to position yourself early.
Or the market is deeply divided between bulls and bears, and the price action looks highly risky. Most people are afraid to act, so after observing the market, you choose to trade against the trend and aim for profits.

When swing trading, having an unrealized loss on your position is normal. Don’t assume you got it wrong and lose your composure or make rash moves just because you see an unrealized loss. High returns inevitably come with high volatility. If you want to capture an entire trend, you have to accept the shakeouts and back-and-forth wicks along the way. They’re unavoidable.
$ZEC
Many people who trade always look for opportunities that seem safe. But honestly, when a market move is obvious to everyone, the potential returns have already been squeezed. With so many participants crowded in, and little turnover or disagreement, it’s hard for a major swing to develop. It may look like everyone can make money, but in the end, most can only earn a meager return, which can easily be wiped out by a small market pullback.

Conversely, the turning points where a trend reverses and a swing begins often feel uncomfortable. The market may either grind lower for a long time as it forms a bottom, or repeatedly chop around with wicks after a rally, triggering stops back and forth. When everyone is hesitant and bulls and bears can’t agree, that’s the turning-point window we should pay close attention to.

But remember, market panic doesn’t mean you can simply buy the dip. Many people get this wrong: they see sentiment souring and enter with a large position. That’s not trading; it’s more like gambling.

Given current market conditions, you can’t judge turning points by sentiment alone; you need to wait for signals from the price action. Plan your entries methodically: mark key support levels in advance, set stop-losses, and prepare a plan to enter in stages. Use small, controlled losses to take a chance on the trend that may follow. Don’t enter at a point of disagreement based on gut feeling; wait for signs of stabilization: no new lows, selling pressure gradually easing, and volume contracting as the price stops falling. Then enter gradually in stages instead of investing all your funds at once.
There’s another hurdle most people can’t get past: accepting unrealized losses on a position.
I’ve fallen into this trap too. Even when you get the direction right, there’s often a long shakeout before the market takes off. Wicks in both directions, choppy price action, and tests of stop-loss levels are all very common. Small unrealized losses are normal, but many people can’t withstand a short-term drawdown and panic-sell. Then, just after they close their position, the shakeout ends and the market moves in the direction they predicted, leaving them to miss a big move for nothing. The most regrettable thing in trading isn’t having your stop-loss triggered; it’s getting the direction right but being shaken out by choppy action and unrealized losses.
Returns and risk are always in balance. If you want to pursue outsized returns from swing trades, you have to withstand choppy markets and short-term unrealized losses. If you only want guaranteed profits and aren’t willing to tolerate any drawdown, swing trading probably isn’t for you. There are no risk-free opportunities in the market.
After trading for a long time, you come to understand that true stability doesn’t mean avoiding all volatility. It means managing your position size and setting stop-losses to keep risk within what you can tolerate. Only when you can accept short-term unrealized losses and withstand choppy price action will you have the confidence to hold your position and capture the returns from an entire swing.
