#日韩股集体大跌 Storage Stocks Amid Circuit-Breaker-Level Plunges in Japanese and South Korean Markets: A “Golden Pit” or a “Downtrend Continuation”? — A Systematic Review and Operational Framework

I. The Full Picture: An Extreme Market Driven by a Double Blow from “Macro + Narrative”

October 15, 2026, was the worst day of the year for Asia-Pacific tech stocks:

- Japan: The Nikkei 225 closed down 4.90% at 64,425.95 points
- South Korea: The KOSPI closed down 7.57% at 5,554 points — plunging more than 9% at one point intraday, triggering the tenth circuit breaker of the year, while the Korea Exchange activated the Sidecar mechanism to suspend programmatic selling
- The three storage giants: SK hynix closed down 11.06% (down 12% at one point intraday), Samsung Electronics closed down 9.48% (down 11% intraday), and Kioxia fell more than 12%
- Continued weakness before the U.S. market open: SanDisk -5.33% (at $1,403, with a market capitalization of approximately $203.9 billion), Micron -4.07%, and Western Digital/Seagate down more than 4%

Background: The KOSPI fell from its historical high of 9,000 points in June to 5,554 points, a cumulative drawdown of approximately 38% — this was not a one-day plunge, but a deep four-month correction.

II. Causes of the Plunge: Neither of the Two Culprits Was the Storage Sector’s Fault

Culprit One: The macro level — a hotter-than-expected CPI reignited rate-hike expectations. On October 14, U.S. September CPI exceeded expectations on both the headline and core measures (headline year-on-year +3.7%, core year-on-year +2.6%, core month-on-month +0.3%), and market pricing for an October rate hike jumped overnight from 22% to 42%. Rising rates → rising discount rates → high-valuation growth stocks bear the brunt. As one of the most richly valued segments of the AI narrative, the storage sector became a major target of the sell-off.

Culprit Two: The narrative level — surging AI infrastructure financing costs fueled “doubts about the story.” The five-year CDS spread of AI cloud service provider CoreWeave exceeded 1,000 basis points, and valuations are not extremely cheap — “having fallen a lot” does not mean “having fully bottomed out.”

III Summary

The essence of this plunge: an extreme correction under the dual pressure of macro rate-hike expectations (crushing valuations) and AI financing concerns (crushing the narrative). The three pillars of storage fundamentals — expanding demand, the price-hike cycle, and earnings realization — remain intact. This is an overlap of “wrongly targeted selling” and a “narrative sell-off,” rather than a breakdown in the underlying logic.

Significance for traders: A short-term “oversold rebound” can be expected, but medium-term “valuation digestion” is not yet complete — the opportunity belongs to those who “wait for stabilization signals,” not those who “jump the gun.” The sell-off has created an opportunity, but the entry ticket is patience and discipline, not courage. #WCTCS9
