Why Don’t Smart Traders Rush to Bet Before the CPI Release?
Before every U.S. CPI release, there are always two schools of thought in the market: one believes traders should position themselves in advance and enter before the move begins; the other insists on waiting for the data to be released, confirming the direction before taking action.
Which approach is smarter?
The advantage of positioning early is the opportunity to secure a better entry before the market reprices. If the judgment is correct, the potential gains can be considerable once the price breaks out rapidly.
The problem, however, is that forecasts before the release are only probabilities, not certain answers. If the actual CPI contradicts expectations, the price could reverse instantly. Traders using high leverage may face the risk of forced liquidation before their judgment is even validated.
Waiting for the data to be released allows traders to first observe the actual CPI, core CPI, and changes in U.S. Treasury yields before deciding whether to enter. The cost is that they may miss the initial part of the move, and the first volatility after the release may not necessarily represent the actual trend direction. #美国9月CPI即将公布
Will CPI come in above or below expectations?
I lean toward a third approach: make a plan in advance, but don’t rush to place a bet early.
Before the release, define the conditions under which you would be bullish or bearish; after the release, observe whether the price breaks through key levels, whether volume confirms the move, and whether the market continues to confirm the direction. If the price action diverges from expectations, abandon the original judgment promptly.
The real advantage does not necessarily come from predicting earliest, but from being able to control losses when the judgment is wrong.
What will you do with tonight’s CPI?
A: Position early and trade the expectation gap B: Wait for the data to be released, then confirm the direction C: Stay on the sidelines for now and wait for a better opportunity
