BTC, U.S. stocks, or gold—which will be the biggest winner from the CPI-driven market?
Why can the same CPI data send BTC, U.S. stocks, and gold in completely different directions?
The key lies in interest rate expectations, the dollar’s trajectory, and how much bullish or bearish news the market has already priced in.
First, BTC. Bitcoin is relatively sensitive to liquidity expectations and market risk appetite. If CPI comes in below expectations, the market may bet on the Federal Reserve shifting toward looser policy, and BTC could quickly attract capital. But if inflation exceeds expectations, a stronger dollar and declining risk appetite could also trigger the unwinding of leveraged positions, leading to sharp price volatility.
Next, U.S. stocks. Technology stocks are particularly sensitive to interest rate expectations. Cooling inflation could ease pressure from future discount rates, benefiting growth stocks; but if core inflation remains strong, the market may reassess corporate valuations. However, earnings expectations and fund positioning will also affect index performance.
Finally, gold. Gold does not generate interest, so changes in real rates are especially important. If CPI comes in below expectations, falling real rates could support gold prices; if overheated inflation pushes rate expectations higher, gold could also come under pressure in the short term. But geopolitical risks and safe-haven demand could alter this logic.
If I had to choose one asset to watch most closely, I would prioritize BTC’s short-term volatility, then use U.S. stocks and gold to confirm the market direction.
But the greatest volatility does not equal the highest returns, nor does it mean the direction will definitely be correct.
