#SKHYNIX 📉 Korean equities and SK Hynix face a confluence of macro and flow pressures.
The KOSPI dropped over 3% intraday on Oct 12, with semiconductor names at the center of the selloff. Brent crude above $100 and rising 10-year US Treasury yields are lifting the discount-rate pressure on high-multiple tech stocks. Foreign and institutional investors sold a combined KRW 3.66tn on Oct 8.
⚖️ For SK Hynix specifically, three distinct forces are at play:
Macro transmission:
High rates and oil prices continue to weigh on valuations. A retreat in both would ease this pressure, but for now, the transmission channel remains active.
Flow dynamics:
Buybacks have been a key source of demand. Disclosed progress shows 20,050,000 shares bought, about 83.3% of the 24,070,000-share plan. With the authorization nearly exhausted, the flow cushion is thinner. The market expects Q4 top-ups, but size and timing are unconfirmed. Additionally, 7-day net outflows sit near $191M, and a large short position of roughly $180M is currently in profit, adding to the cautious positioning.
Corporate structure:
Reports indicate that SK Hynix's NAND subsidiary, Solidigm, has picked underwriters for a potential 2027 IPO at a valuation of up to $100bn. If completed, this would bring in outside capital while lowering SK Hynix's economic interest in the NAND business, which is why the market applies a dilution and duplicate-listing discount. The company says it is still reviewing options, and no plan is confirmed.
📊 On the technical side, the stock pulled back sharply from around 1,386 to a recent low of 1,186, currently trading near 1,227. The 1-hour chart shows sideways movement in a weak range, with the MACD red bars shrinking below zero and RSI sitting at 46, reflecting a lack of strong bullish counterattack. Support rests at 1,186, while resistance sits at 1,235–1,250.
The "dip" here is not just a price event. It reflects macro pressure, flow exhaustion, and structural uncertainty playing out simultaneously.
When these factors align, what do you weigh more: the macro backdrop or the company-specific mechanics? 👇
