#每周来晒 #韩股大跌你会抄底吗 Foreign capital outflows at a 17-year low, yet retail investors are buying the dip: the bottom in Korean stocks has never been formed by retail investors 🕳️
Korean stocks plunged 3.65% to close at 6,384 points on 10/12 (a new low since 8/11), with Samsung down 4.39% and SK Hynix down 4.52%.
Buying the dip now has a greater probability of being a "trap" than an "opportunity"—because today's market structure is crystal clear: foreign investors are fleeing (at a 17-year level), while retail investors are buying. Bottoms have never formed this way.
I. Why this is a "trap," not an "opportunity": four reasons
① Foreign investors have retreated to a 17-year low. Foreign ownership of Samsung Electronics has fallen to 46.37%—the lowest since 2009. Foreign investors recorded net sales of 2.02 trillion won that day, institutions recorded net sales of 110.6 billion won, and retail investors recorded net purchases of 1.47 trillion won—the buyers were retail investors, while smart money was retreating. Historically, this market structure has rarely marked a bottom.
② The AI narrative is still cooling. The trigger was the unwinding of the AI trade amid concerns over OpenAI's revenue—Samsung/SK Hynix are on the front line of AI memory, and until the AI story recovers, they have no engine to drive a rebound.
③ ASML's price hikes are new negative news, not "the bad news being fully priced in." Lithography equipment components will rise 10% in price (starting in 2027)—the logic of cost pressure squeezing profits has only just begun to play out.
④ CPI on 10/14 hangs overhead. The macro environment is still wavering, and high-beta Korean stocks will see the impact amplified—if CPI comes in hot, they will take another hit; even if CPI cools, Korean stocks will not be the first to rise. Entering now is like guessing the answers on the night before an exam.
II. Three signals that would turn this into an "opportunity"
1. Foreign investors turn to net buyers—the strongest signal
2. The AI narrative stabilizes: OpenAI/US chip stocks stop falling, and SK Hynix provides strong earnings guidance (in late October)
3. KOSPI stabilizes on strong volume at 6,200–6,300—a decline that runs out of steam + buyers stepping in
Korean stocks are now a classic "catching a falling knife" scenario—foreign investors have not returned, the narrative has not stabilized, CPI has not been released, and retail investors are buying the dip. Buying the dip is not impossible; it is just not viable "now." The bottom in Korean stocks has never been formed by retail investors; it has been bought back by foreign investors. Keep your hands off and wait for foreign investors.
