Overnight, hardware wallets went from being the safest way to store crypto to being a highly unreliable option, because hardware wallets sold by official distributors may have been implanted with hacking devices.

I just saw the news saying that the Ledger supply chain attack may have spread to Europe! It has been confirmed that hardware wallets sold by an official distributor were found to contain implanted devices!

In theory, the distributor was officially authorized. If customers were robbed under these circumstances, does Ledger bear any responsibility to compensate them? This is another new issue that urgently needs to be addressed.

However, this incident has set a bad precedent. Ledger has alerted hackers around the world that this is possible, and more people may start thinking of ways to exploit the supply chain in the future. After all, global supply chains are long, and security vulnerabilities that are susceptible to attack exist at every stage, including factory production lines, transportation, and distribution. Therefore, going forward, customers using hardware wallets will also need to be able to determine whether their hardware wallets have been tampered with or implanted with malicious devices. This is impossible for the vast majority of retail users.

In fact, I have long believed that hardware wallets are not suitable for individual users, because they require continuous and careful maintenance, and individual users do not have the capability to do this. Serious problems such as loss, damage, or forgotten passwords could easily occur, and there would be virtually no solution. $BNB

Now even unboxing videos can't be trusted—who knows whether it's been repackaged.

Supply-chain attacks are too insidious—even official distributors can be compromised, and retail investors simply have no way to defend against them.

I told you long ago: a seed phrase written on paper plus multisig is far more reliable than a hardware wallet, and it also costs less to maintain.

Will we have to disassemble hardware wallets to inspect them before buying in the future? Ridiculous.

If Ledger shirks its compensation obligations this time, trust in the entire industry will completely collapse.
