Overnight, hardware wallets went from being the safest way to store coins to being a highly unreliable one, because hardware wallets sold by official distributors may have had hacker devices implanted in them.
I just saw news that the Ledger supply chain attack may have spread to Europe! It has been confirmed that hardware wallets sold by an official distributor were found to contain implanted devices!
This is a supply chain attack. Hackers have come up with a highly creative scheme, tampering with products during the supply chain process. Hardware wallets cannot possibly be handed directly to end users after production; during sales, they inevitably pass through distributors, transportation, and other stages. This time, it seems the hackers directly bought the qualifications of a distributor, openly installed theft devices in the hardware wallets, and then sent them to customers.
In theory, the distributor was officially authorized. Since customers were robbed this way, does Ledger bear responsibility for compensation? This is another new issue that urgently needs to be resolved.
This incident has set a terrible precedent for Ledger and alerted hackers around the world that this can be done. More people may start thinking of ways to exploit the supply chain in the future. After all, the global supply chain is long, and vulnerable security risks susceptible to attack exist at every stage, from factory production lines to transportation and distributors. Therefore, in the future, customers using hardware wallets will also need the ability to determine whether their hardware wallets have been tampered with and implanted with malicious devices—something the vast majority of retail investors cannot do.
I think the Ledger hardware wallet theft incident should benefit leading exchanges such as Gate. Compared with hardware wallets, storing funds on leading exchanges is clearly safer and more reliable, and also earns interest. Clearly, these major exchanges are no longer likely to run away or go bankrupt; they have extremely high security and abundant reserves, and even if they were hacked, they would have the ability to compensate users. To put it bluntly, if you are robbed, you can at least go and make a fuss at the exchange, and perhaps get your money back. But if your funds stored in a hardware wallet are stolen, you would not even know whom to complain to.
In fact, I have long believed that hardware wallets are not suitable for individual users, because they require continuous and careful maintenance, which individual users are not capable of providing. Serious problems such as loss, damage, and forgotten passwords can easily occur, and they are almost impossible to resolve.
So while your coins are still safe, register a Gate account and deposit them there to earn interest. USDT APY has now exceeded 11%! You can also get a Gate Visa virtual card at the same time, allowing you to spend your crypto earnings directly by card worldwide.
A reminder here: those who want to apply for a Gate Card must first upgrade their Gate App to the latest version. As shown below, click Money—Card at the top of the homepage to start applying for a U Card. 🎁You can also click here to apply directly: https://www.gate.com/zh/card?ref=VgJCUQ
Select “Other” as your place of residence, and don’t forget to enter the invitation code VgJCUQ to receive a small 2 USDT bonus—enough for a pork knuckle rice meal. If you don’t enter it, you’ll miss out.

Good morning, Mr. Tang. The latest ledger controversy is indeed quite disheartening; everyone can follow gate money

This supply-chain attack tactic is downright dirty—even official distributors can be infiltrated, leaving retail investors defenseless altogether

How is liability determined in the Ledger matter? If an officially certified distributor runs into trouble, the compensation mechanism needs to keep pace

Gate’s ad came at just the right time—an 11% annualized return on USDT is indeed better than letting it gather dust in a cold wallet

The most frightening thing is that once a precedent has been set, every link in the supply chain could be targeted thereafter, leaving no way to guard against it

Hardware wallets have fallen from their pedestal; these days, exchange custody seems more hassle-free, and the interest is pretty sweet
