Nearly $90 million vanished overnight—hardware wallets are not an infallible safety shield either
If you think buying a hardware wallet means you can rest easy from then on, this Ledger-related incident is worth studying carefully. According to public reports on October 9, some users who purchased devices through the Southeast Asian distributor CryptoBilis had their assets stolen, with blockchain investigators estimating the losses at nearly $90 million. However, the exact amount of the losses and the root cause of the incident still require further verification.
The aspect of this incident most worth discussing is our understanding of “cold wallet security.” The core value of a hardware wallet is helping users isolate their private keys from online environments, but that does not mean the device’s source, initialization process, seed phrase storage, and transaction signing can be ignored. Security has never been the responsibility of a single product; it is the result of an entire process working together.
If a device is tampered with somewhere in the supply chain, the risk may go beyond simple phishing. The incident is still under investigation, and it cannot be directly concluded that all affected devices have hardware issues, but it does remind users that the purchasing channel is also part of the security boundary.
For ordinary investors, I believe three things are particularly important. First, prioritize purchasing devices through official channels or verified authorized distributors. Second, seed phrases must be generated independently by you and stored securely; never enter them on unfamiliar websites or give them to so-called customer service representatives. Third, large assets should not rely on a single protective measure; establish backup and tiered management plans based on your own capabilities.
The most dangerous idea in the security field is “This kind of thing should not happen to me.” Market volatility may cause you to earn a little less, but a security incident can directly change your account balance. Hardware wallets are important tools, but genuine security comes from proper usage and continuous risk awareness.$SPCX #Ledger事件损失近9000万
