#USOpticalCommunicationStocksCloseLower $ALAB $LITE $COHR
GM ☕ Nasdaq fell only 0.22% on Oct 7, yet optical names dropped 9% to 12%. When the index barely moves and one group gets hit that hard, it's usually not a market panic, it's a crowded trade getting trimmed. I can't prove the reason, and I'd rather say that than invent one. What I can do is check which of these charts is still healthy. Here's my traffic light.
🟢 LITE: the strongest trend, but the farthest from safety
Price is about 1,111, with the 14, 21 and 35 MAs stacked and rising (1,054, 1,013, 971)
RSI is about 67.6 and MACD is still positive with a growing histogram
Resistance is 1,172.5, about 5.5% above
The catch: the purple support sits all the way down at 860.7, about 22% below. That's not a level I can use for a tight stop
My read: the trend is healthy, but this is the one where chasing is most expensive. It has run roughly 85% from its low around 600, so I only touch it on a pullback into the moving averages.
🟡 ALAB: the strong chart with a rejection on it
Price is about 381.8, and the last 4H candle is up about 2.2%, so the bounce has already started
It wicked up to about 400 and got sold hard, so that's the ceiling to respect
Resistance is 386.4, only 1.2% above price. MAs at 364 and 362.7, support at 339.2
RSI is about 63.5 and MACD is flat
My read: the bounce is real, but price is right under resistance after a rejection wick. Good for patience, not for chasing.
🔴 COHR: the weakest momentum of the three
Price is about 333.2, right on its 14 MA (333.7). The 21 MA is at 331.3, the 35 MA at 315.2
MACD crossed down and the histogram is negative, so momentum is fading even though RSI is still about 61
Resistance is 343.6, about 3% above. Support is 320.3, about 4% below
My read: this is the one where the pullback hurt the structure the most. It's not broken, but I want it to prove itself before I lean on it.
What they have in common
All three are still above their 35 MA, and none of them has broken its main support. So the trend is bent, not broken. The drop looks like a shakeout of a crowded trade, not a thesis change, and that fits what I've seen earlier this year in the same group: sharp one-day sell-offs, no company-specific bad news, then recovery attempts.
The macro layer (the admin's questions)
These are high-multiple growth stocks, and the Fed is in a hiking cycle. Rate expectations hit this kind of stock first. With CPI on Oct 14 and the Fed decision on Oct 28, a hot print can push this group down again, while a calm print gives the support levels a chance to hold. Is it priced in? The hike path is, but the surprise isn't. Also notable: NVDA made a fresh high earlier this week while these names sold off, which tells me money is rotating inside the AI trade, not leaving it. That's my guess from the charts, not a fact.
My plans (4H, my own view, not advice)
COHR:
Pullback long: 322 to 320.3
Stop loss: 4H close below 314.5 (under the 35 MA)
TP1: 331.3, roughly 1.6R
TP2: 343.6, roughly 3.5R
Breakout version: 4H close above 343.6 with a hold, then 350
If 314.5 breaks: step aside, or short a failed retest toward 308 and then 300
LITE:
Pullback long: 1,055 to 1,045 (the 14 MA zone)
Stop loss: 4H close below 1,005
TP1: 1,110, roughly 1.4R
TP2: 1,172.5, roughly 2.7R
TP3: 1,200
Breakout version: 4H close above 1,172.5, then I trail my stop under the 14 MA instead of guessing a target
If 1,005 breaks: step aside, or short toward 971 and then 900
ALAB:
Pullback long: 364 to 362.7 (the 14 and 21 MA)
Stop loss: 4H close below 355
TP1: 381.8, roughly 2.2R
TP2: 386.4, roughly 2.7R
TP3: 400, roughly 4.3R
Breakout version: 4H close above 386.4 with a hold, then 400
If 355 breaks: step aside, or short toward 340
Small size, low leverage, orders at levels. Stocks don't trade 24/7, so gaps can jump over a stop, and that's why I keep size smaller here than I do on crypto.
My check-in: calm, light positions, spot untouched, cash kept aside on purpose. After a day like Oct 7, I'd rather be early to a level than late to a candle.
Ranking in one line: LITE for trend, ALAB for the bounce, COHR for caution. Which light do you trust most?
