The Witness Program Has Prizes, but the Real GT Catalyst Is the Quarterly Burn: The Math on a 2.5M GT Event

GT is at 11.18 today, down 0.88%, and the 24-hour turnover is about $356K. That is the lowest in my five-day series, which ran $466K, $826K, $381K and now $356K. Attention around the witness program is fading while price stays flat, and views per post under the hashtag have slid from about 19 to under 14 in three days. The campaign itself is not what moves GT supply.

What does is the burn schedule. Gate allocates 15% of business profits from spot, margin and futures trading to quarterly buybacks and burns, with a further 5% going to GT research and development, and on-chain gas burns on GateChain add to it. Cumulatively about 189.9M GT have been burned, roughly 63.3% of the 300M cap. Q2 2026 alone burned about 2.57M GT, and a similar Q3 burn is widely expected in October, which traders are already positioning for.

Now the math, because size matters. A 2.57M GT burn at 11.18 is about $28.7M, roughly 2.5% of the 104.66M tokens now shown as circulating, or about 81 days of today's turnover. A burn that size every quarter shrinks supply by about 10% a year, and that is a much bigger effect on a token this thin than the witness program's GT prizes. One detail worth checking: the circulating supply on Gate's price page fell from 106.65M yesterday to 104.66M today, about 2.0M GT lower, which is close to a typical quarterly burn. I would confirm with the official announcement before assuming any of it is new or already in the price.

The risk is that a burn is a well-known trade. When traders buy ahead of it, the announcement can become the exit. So I separate the structural story from the timing. The structural story is real, with supply falling about 2.5% a quarter against a $1.16B market cap. The timing is where you can get hurt.

My plan: I am constructive while GT holds above 10.90, the old ceiling that should now act as support, and I want to buy a retest of 10.81 to 10.90. The stop is under 10.39, the September 19 level. Targets are the 11.31 high from October 3 and then 12.00. From 10.85 that is risking about 4.2% to make about 10.6% at 12.00, roughly 2.5 to 1. I would not chase 11.18. If the burn announcement lands and GT cannot hold above 11.31 within 24 hours, I treat it as sell-the-news and close the trade. A daily close below 10.39 cancels the idea.

Do you trade a burn before the announcement, or do you wait to see how the market reacts after it?
