ETH at $2,685: A Small Green Move, a Big Macro Setup, and 5% Bonus APR

Ethereum is back at around $2,685, up 0.74%, and I think the interesting part is not the size of today's move. It is what ETH is doing while the market is digesting weak U.S. employment data, changing Fed expectations, ETF flows, and a still-active yield opportunity on Gate.

Gate's current ETH earning campaign offers users who net deposit at least 0.3 ETH and subscribe to the 7-day fixed-term Simple Earn product an additional 5% bonus APR on top of the base yield. The bonus comes from a 100,000 USDT pool and is distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. The campaign ends October 7 at 19:00 UTC+8, so the remaining window is relatively short.

For me, this makes the current setup more interesting because the market does not require ETH to immediately break out for the earning opportunity to have value.

At $2,685, ETH is sitting close to the middle of an important short-term range. The recent 24-hour range has been approximately $2,650 to $2,769, giving traders a clear battlefield. The first support remains around $2,650, followed by the lower Bollinger Band near $2,637. If that zone holds, buyers have a reasonable area to defend. Below it, the more important structural support is around $2,528.

On the upside, I am watching $2,690–$2,702 first. A convincing move through that area could open the way toward the $2,734 upper Bollinger Band and eventually the recent high around $2,769. From $2,685, that means the next resistance levels are relatively close, so I would rather see confirmation than chase a sudden candle.

The macro picture is equally important. The September U.S. jobs report showed only 29,000 new jobs, well below expectations, while unemployment increased to 4.2% and previous months were revised lower. Wage growth also slowed. This combination has strengthened expectations that the Federal Reserve may remain cautious rather than move aggressively with further rate hikes.

That is potentially supportive for ETH and other risk assets, but inflation remains the problem. Higher energy prices and geopolitical pressure could keep inflation elevated, meaning the Fed still has to balance a weakening labor market against price pressures.

Institutional positioning is also mixed. ETH spot ETFs recently recorded roughly $55.37 million in net outflows, while total ETF assets were around $17.71 billion. Meanwhile, derivatives positioning shows a long/short ratio near 1.68, open interest around $33.98 billion, and funding close to neutral at approximately 0.03%. I see that as a market with a bullish bias but without extremely aggressive leverage.

Technically, ETH remains relatively balanced. RSI around 45 suggests neither overbought nor oversold conditions. That gives me a simple framework: $2,637–$2,650 is the support zone, $2,700 is the first confirmation level, and $2,769 is the major short-term breakout test.

The 5% bonus APR should also be viewed realistically. On 0.3 ETH at $2,685, the position is worth roughly $806. A 5% annualized bonus for seven days works out to only about 0.096%, or approximately $0.77. So I would never treat the bonus as protection against ETH volatility. It is an additional benefit for holding, not a substitute for risk management.

My view is simple: ETH holding above $2,650 keeps the short-term structure constructive. A daily close above $2,700 would strengthen the bullish case, while losing $2,637 could bring $2,528 back into focus.

For anyone considering the earning campaign, remember that the bonus pool is limited, participation is first-come, first-served, yields are annualized estimates, and crypto prices can move much more than a one-week bonus can compensate for.

For me, the better approach is patience: let the yield work in the background, watch the macro data, and let ETH prove its next direction instead of chasing the move.
