9K Jobs Wasn't the Trade, Leverage Was: Reading the Fade Through Open Interest

Before the jobs number even printed, positioning had already moved. Bitcoin open interest climbed by about 27,000 BTC, roughly $2.3B, from near a 12-month low of 626,000 BTC to about 653,000 BTC between September 30 and Friday morning. Over the same stretch annualized perpetual funding jumped from around 3% to about 10%. That means longs were paying up to stay in the trade. In the 24 hours before the report, about 91% of futures liquidations were shorts, so the run toward 87,000 was already a squeeze before the 29K headline arrived.

The print then added fuel: BTC went through 87,000 and topped at 87,250, and roughly $344M of liquidations followed, mostly shorts. But a squeeze is not a trend. The high stopped about 150 points under 87,400, a level where liquidation clusters were stacked, and once the shorts above were cleared there was nothing left to chase. Spot support was decent but not decisive, with US spot ETFs taking in about $102.7M on October 1. Since then BTC has given back about 2,600 and sits near 84,600, with a 24-hour range of 84,068 to 87,086.

The reaction function is the interesting part. After August's hot 162K print, BTC dipped. After September's cold 29K print, it spiked and faded. Neither a hot number nor a cold one produced a durable bid, which tells me flows and leverage are driving the tape more than the macro data itself.

The poll under this hashtag points the same way for me. 44% expect the data to favor risk assets, against 29% who expect macro pressure to persist and 14% who want more data. A crowd leaning bullish right after a faded spike, with Fear and Greed already at 73 on October 1, is where I get more careful, not more aggressive.

My bias is neutral to cautious below 87,400. The floor is still 84,068. I would only add if funding cools back toward 3% annualized while 84,068 holds, with invalidation on a daily close under 82,281, since analysts see liquidation clusters thinning below 82,000. First target is 87,000. A daily close above 87,400 with open interest flat or falling would be a spot-led breakout, and that is the only version of the move I would trust.

When BTC pops on a macro headline, do you check open interest and funding before you chase, or do you trust the headline?
