The AI Hardware Rally Isn't About Chips Anymore, It's About Everything Around Them

AI hardware had a strong session across the board today: Lumentum up over 5%, Corning and Marvell up over 4%, ARM and Coherent up over 3%, SK Hynix up over 2%, Micron and Broadcom up over 1%. What actually interests me here isn't the size of any single move, it's the composition of who's rallying. This isn't a pure "chipmakers are up" day. Optics, glass, and connectivity names are leading, and that tells a more specific story than just "AI stocks good."

Why I think this matters more than a typical green day

Marvell, ARM and Micron are the names most people associate with AI hardware, processors and memory. But Lumentum leading at over 5%, with Corning and Coherent also near the top, points to something more specific: the market rewarding the physical infrastructure that moves data between chips and data centers, optical transceivers, specialty glass, photonics, not just the chips doing the computing.

That distinction matters because it suggests the rally isn't just riding one company's earnings or one headline. It looks like the market repricing an entire layer of the AI buildout that doesn't get nearly as much attention as GPUs, the physical connectivity and interconnect infrastructure that has to scale right alongside compute demand.

What the charts I have in front of me actually show

Looking at ARM, MRVL and MU together, the picture is a set of stocks that are extended, but not identically positioned.

ARM is at $293.67, up 3.68% today, but it's still trading well below its earlier high near $440 to $460 and has spent the past month consolidating in the $260 to $300 range after a sharp correction. RSI at 54.75 is healthy but unremarkable, and MACD is only modestly positive. This looks like a name recovering from a real pullback rather than one making fresh highs.

MRVL is a different story entirely. It's at $263.27, up 4.52%, and it's been building a clean uptrend since the June lows near $160, with a series of higher lows through August and September. RSI at 61.53 shows real strength without being stretched, and it's now pushing back toward its recent high around $275. This is the strongest-looking chart of the group, a name in a genuine trend, not just bouncing off a low.

MU is at $1,065.40, up 1.09%, sitting just under its recent high near $1,117 after a long, steady climb from around $500 back in May. RSI at 59.88 and a still-rising MACD suggest this uptrend has room, and unlike ARM, MU never had a sharp breakdown, it's been a smoother grind higher the whole way.

That divergence, ARM recovering from a correction, MRVL in a strong clean trend, MU in a steady grind, tells me today's rally is lifting names from very different technical starting points. That's actually a healthier sign than if everything were moving in lockstep from the same setup, it suggests genuine sector-wide demand rather than one stock dragging correlated names up with it.

Is this rotation into optics and data-center infrastructure, or just a broad AI bid

I'd lean toward calling this a genuine rotation, not just a broad "everything AI" bid, specifically because of who's leading. If this were pure sentiment-driven buying, you'd expect the largest, most-followed names to lead by the widest margin. Instead, the biggest percentage mover is a photonics and optical name, which suggests specific capital allocation toward the physical layer of AI infrastructure rather than a blanket re-rating of anything with "AI" attached to it.

That said, one strong day doesn't confirm a multi-week rotation. What would confirm it for me is seeing optics and interconnect names continue outperforming the marquee chip names over the coming week or two, rather than today's leadership reverting back to whichever stock has the next earnings catalyst.

My take and what I'd actually watch

Of the three charts I have, MRVL looks the most technically constructive right now, a clean uptrend with room before it's stretched. ARM looks like it's still proving whether its recovery from the correction has real legs, given how far it remains from its old highs. MU looks steady but is close enough to its recent high that I'd want to see it clear that level with conviction rather than stall there.

For the optics and interconnect theme specifically, since that's what stood out most in today's leaderboard, I'd want to see whether that outperformance holds over the next several sessions. A one-day lead from a smaller-cap name can easily be a single catalyst or short squeeze rather than the start of a genuine capital rotation.

What I'm watching next

Whether MRVL can clear and hold above its recent $275 high with volume, which would confirm the strongest chart in the group is breaking out rather than just testing resistance again. Whether ARM can build above $300, a level it's struggled with repeatedly since its correction. And whether the optics and photonics names keep leading over chip names in the sessions ahead, which is the real signal that would tell me this is a rotation and not just a broad rally day.

Risks

A single strong day doesn't confirm a trend, and several of these names, MRVL and MU especially, are already extended after long runs, which raises the bar for continuation. If this turns out to be reaction to one specific catalyst rather than a broader infrastructure story, the optics-led leadership could fade just as quickly as it appeared.

Discussion

Do you read today's move as genuine rotation into the physical AI infrastructure layer, optics, glass, interconnects, or just a broad AI sentiment day that happened to lift those names the most? And between ARM, MRVL and MU, which chart looks like the better setup to you right now?
