Anthropic Files for IPO at a $2 Trillion Target: Reading the $41.97B Loss the Right Way
Anthropic's IPO prospectus is out, and the numbers are extreme in both directions. Revenue for fiscal 2025 hit $4.59 billion, up 1,088% from $386 million the year before. At the same time, the GAAP net loss widened to $41.97 billion, up from $8.31 billion. Anthropic is reportedly targeting a valuation above $2 trillion, more than double its own $965 billion estimate from May, and the float is expected after the November US midterms. This is one of those headline pairs, huge growth and a huge loss, where the second number without context looks a lot scarier than it actually is.
What the numbers really mean
Start with growth. A 1,088% revenue increase in a single year is extraordinary by any standard, and it puts Anthropic's Claude business at a real commercial scale rather than a research project burning cash with no revenue behind it.
Now the loss. On an operating basis, excluding one-time items, Anthropic lost about $8.06 billion in 2025, up from $2.98 billion the year before. That is the number that reflects the actual cost of running the business: compute and infrastructure spending rose 190% to $7.33 billion, which alone made up 58% of total operating expenses and was roughly 1.6 times annual revenue. That is a company spending aggressively to build capacity ahead of demand, which is a familiar pattern for infrastructure-heavy tech companies in a fast growth phase.
The headline $41.97 billion net loss is a different figure. About $34 billion of it came from an accounting charge tied to the changing estimated value of financing that could eventually convert into Anthropic shares. That is not cash spent running the business, it's a non-cash valuation adjustment on prior fundraising instruments. So the "real" operating loss, the one that tells you how the business is performing day to day, is closer to $8 billion, not $42 billion. Mixing the two up is the easiest way to misread this filing.
Other details worth noting
Anthropic ended 2025 with $20.28 billion in cash and short-term investments, which gives it real runway. But there's a customer concentration risk: its two largest direct customers accounted for about 24% of total revenue combined, and many top customers aren't locked into long-term contracts. That means a meaningful chunk of revenue could move if even one or two large clients pull back. The company also disclosed plans for roughly $518 billion in future cloud, compute, and infrastructure obligations, which shows just how capital-intensive staying competitive in frontier AI is expected to be.
How to view growth alongside heavy losses
I'd separate this into three questions rather than one verdict. First, is the growth real and durable, or a temporary spike? A 1,088% jump from a small base is impressive, but the next few years of growth rate matter more than the historical jump. Second, is the spending disciplined or open-ended? Compute costs rising 190% and eating 58% of operating expenses is normal for this stage of the AI infrastructure race, but investors will want to see the growth rate of spending slow relative to revenue over time. Third, is the loss actually cash burn, or mostly accounting noise? Here it's clearly the latter for the bulk of the headline number, which matters a lot for how the market should price this listing.
What an AI giant listing could mean for valuations
A $2 trillion target valuation, more than double Anthropic's own May estimate, would make this one of the largest AI-related listings to date, alongside SpaceX's recent debut at $1.77 trillion. If the market absorbs that valuation well, it could reset how investors think about pricing AI infrastructure companies broadly, tying value more to revenue growth trajectory and compute capacity than to near-term profitability. If the listing struggles or gets priced down significantly from the target, it could have the opposite effect and make the market more skeptical of premium AI valuations generally, which would be a headwind for AI-adjacent names.
For names like NVDA and AMD, the read-through comes mostly from Anthropic's spending plans. $518 billion in future infrastructure obligations is a direct signal of continued massive demand for compute, chips, and cloud capacity. That's a supportive data point for chipmakers and infrastructure providers, since it confirms that the largest AI labs still see years of aggressive buildout ahead of them, regardless of how their own losses look on paper.
Looking at the ANTHROPICUSDT chart on Gate
The tokenized stock shows the pattern clearly. There was an explosive initial rally of over 21% in a short window, followed by a period of consolidation near the highs, then another strong leg up through early September that pushed price toward the $2,200 to $2,250 area. Since mid-September, price has pulled back steadily and is now trading around $2,059, right near the lower Bollinger Band at $2,050.56, with the 50-period MA at $2,114.43 sitting just above current price.
RSI is at 34.49, approaching oversold territory but not there yet. MACD is negative, with the histogram in red, showing the pullback still has some downward momentum behind it. This looks like a healthy multi-week correction after two strong rally legs, not a collapse, but it hasn't shown clear signs of bottoming yet either.
Key levels
Resistance: $2,100 to $2,115, where the 50 MA and the middle Bollinger Band sit together. Above that, the $2,200 to $2,250 zone marks the recent high.
Support: the $2,050 area, the lower Bollinger Band, is the immediate level being tested. Below that, there isn't a clear recent reference until the $1,900 to $1,950 zone from the August consolidation.
Bullish scenario
Price holds the $2,050 area, RSI turns up from the mid-30s, and ANTHROPICUSDT reclaims $2,100 to $2,115. A clean move back above $2,115 with volume would suggest the pullback is complete and buyers are stepping back in ahead of the actual IPO listing.
Bearish scenario
Price breaks $2,050 with RSI staying weak and MACD deepening in negative territory. That would point toward the $1,900 to $1,950 zone as the next area to test, and would suggest the market wants more clarity on valuation and listing timing before committing again.
What I'm watching next
Whether $2,050 holds as support in the coming sessions. Any updates on the actual IPO timing relative to the November midterms. How the market reacts to the $2 trillion valuation target as more details emerge. And whether other AI infrastructure names move in sympathy, since Anthropic's spending plans are a direct signal for chip and cloud demand.
Risks
Customer concentration is real, with two clients representing a quarter of revenue and no long-term lock-in. The $518 billion spending plan assumes continued strong demand, which isn't guaranteed. Regulatory and AI safety scrutiny, which the filing itself flags around increasingly autonomous model behavior, could affect sentiment. And IPO pricing, especially at a scale this large, can be volatile once shares are actually trading.
My overall view
I think the headline $41.97 billion loss is being widely misread. The actual cash-burning operating loss of about $8 billion, against $4.59 billion in revenue and over 1,000% growth, tells a much more reasonable growth story. The bigger question for me isn't whether Anthropic's losses are scary, it's whether a $2 trillion valuation properly prices in customer concentration risk and the sheer scale of future infrastructure spending required to stay competitive. On the chart, the pullback to $2,050 looks like a normal digestion of a strong rally, and I'd want to see that level hold before assuming the next leg up is starting.
Discussion
Do you read the $41.97B loss as a red flag, or do you think the accounting-driven portion of it is being overblown in the headlines? And do you think a $2 trillion Anthropic listing would validate premium AI valuations across the sector, or set up a valuation reset if it disappoints?
