Glassnode Flags Altseason Again, But This Rotation Doesn't Look Like the Ones We're Used To

Glassnode's altcoin cycle signal flipping back into altseason territory is getting a lot of attention, and it's worth actually unpacking what that signal is measuring before getting excited about it.

What the signal actually shows

This particular metric compares Bitcoin's performance against a broad basket of the top altcoins. According to the available data, it recently moved back above the 50 threshold that separates Bitcoin favoring conditions from altcoin favoring conditions. Historically, readings like this have preceded periods where altcoins decouple and outperform Bitcoin on a relative basis.

Here is the part that matters. This flip has reportedly been driven more by Bitcoin weakening than by altcoins actually rallying hard. After roughly two years of consistent selling pressure across the altcoin market, many of these assets appear to simply be running out of sellers, so they are holding up better on a relative basis during Bitcoin's latest drawdown. That is a very different setup from a classic altseason where capital is aggressively rotating out of Bitcoin and into alts on strength.

Why Bitcoin dominance still matters here

Bitcoin dominance has been hovering in a range through much of this year, generally cited in the mid to high 50s percent, which is historically elevated compared to prior cycles. Past altseasons in 2018 and 2021 only really got going once dominance broke down decisively below the 50 percent level and kept falling. We are not there yet based on the numbers being discussed.

Bullish scenario

If Bitcoin dominance continues to slide and the ETH to BTC ratio starts recovering alongside it, that combination has historically confirmed the start of a genuine rotation. If that plays out, capital could move from Bitcoin into Ethereum first, then spread out into large cap alts and eventually into mid caps, which is the classic multi stage rotation pattern.

Bearish scenario

If this signal flip is purely a function of Bitcoin weakness rather than altcoin strength, it could fade quickly once Bitcoin stabilizes. A dominance bounce back above recent highs would likely kill this narrative fast, and traders who position too early into a broad "altseason is here" thesis could get caught in a fakeout, which has happened multiple times in this cycle already.

What to watch

Bitcoin dominance on a weekly closing basis is the single most useful number here, along with the ETH to BTC ratio. A one week dip in dominance means very little, a multi week downtrend confirmed by weekly closes is what has mattered historically.

Risks

Altseason calls have been wrong more often than right over the past two years in this cycle. Treating any single signal as confirmation without checking dominance trend and ETH relative strength is how people get whipsawed.

My take

I think this is an interesting early signal rather than a green light to rotate hard into alts. The fact that it's being driven by Bitcoin softness rather than altcoin strength makes me want to see dominance actually break down before treating this as a real rotation. Worth watching closely, not worth acting on in isolation.

Do you think this is the start of a real rotation, or another false signal like we've seen a few times already this cycle?
