The Garrett Jin ZEC Short Is Finally Closed, Here's What the Numbers Actually Show
According to on-chain monitoring reported by multiple outlets today, Garrett Jin has closed out his ZEC short position, held for roughly three months, realizing a loss of about 36.13 million dollars. His account's cumulative historical losses now sit around 12.77 million dollars. He still holds roughly 1,330 BTC in long positions, valued at approximately 107.8 million dollars, currently showing an unrealized gain of about 3.71 million dollars.
I want to walk through how this position actually evolved, because the story here isn't just "he lost money on a short," it's a pretty clear illustration of what happens when someone keeps fighting a trend rather than cutting losses early.
Back on September 17, this same short was reportedly sitting at around 37,760 ZEC with a notional value near 51.5 million dollars, already underwater by more than 26 million dollars at that point. And here's the part that stands out to me, rather than closing or trimming the position as it moved against him, reports indicate he actually added to the short roughly 11 hours before that particular update. That's a specific decision worth sitting with, doubling down on a losing short while the asset keeps climbing is a materially different choice than holding an existing position and hoping for a reversal.
Zooming out further, this position apparently goes back even earlier than that. There are reports of a smaller short closure back when ZEC was still rallying, where Jin took an 11.24 million dollar profit on part of the position at one point, and separate coverage referencing a liquidation price around 2,631 to 2,857 dollars as ZEC kept climbing toward those levels. Given ZEC eventually pushed well past 1,500 in recent trading, and has spent this stretch as one of the strongest-performing assets in the entire market, it's not hard to see why a persistent short here kept bleeding.
What makes this genuinely interesting rather than just "trader loses money" is the size and duration involved, a three-month short that was added to rather than cut, on an asset that's been in one of the more sustained rallies of this cycle. That's a specific kind of risk management pattern, holding and adding to a losing directional bet against strong momentum, and it's worth understanding as a pattern rather than judging the individual outcome in isolation, since plenty of traders have made similar choices during strong trends without this level of scrutiny.
On the spot side, separate on-chain tracking has referenced Jin holding around 202,000 ZEC in spot with substantial unrealized gains, which puts this closed short in a different light. If that spot position is accurate, the short may have functioned as a partial hedge against a much larger long exposure rather than purely a standalone bearish bet, though I want to be careful here, that's an interpretation based on the relative sizes reported, not a confirmed statement about intent from Jin himself.
As for what this means for ZEC going forward, I'd be cautious about reading too much into one large short closing. A big short getting closed removes one source of potential future buying pressure that would have come from a forced liquidation, but it doesn't necessarily tell you much about where new demand or selling pressure is heading next. ZEC's price action from here will likely depend far more on the broader market conditions and whatever's been driving its own specific rally than on this one position closing out.
The BTC long sitting alongside all this, currently in modest profit, is a reminder that this account's overall picture is mixed rather than uniformly bad, a large realized loss on one trade doesn't necessarily reflect the account's total performance across everything it's holding.
Not financial advice. Always do your own research before making any trading or investment decision.
Here is the question for discussion: does a large, persistent short like this finally closing change your read on ZEC's near-term direction at all, or do you think the broader momentum behind this rally was always going to matter more than any single position?
