MSTR Is Moving Faster Than Bitcoin — But That’s Exactly Why This Rally Needs Attention
Strategy (MSTR) has become one of the strongest Bitcoin-linked trades in the equity market again. Over the past month, MSTR gained roughly 48%, while Bitcoin gained around 11–12% over the comparable period. That gap is the important part of the story. MSTR is not simply Bitcoin in stock-market form. It is a leveraged corporate vehicle built around Bitcoin exposure, capital markets, preferred securities, debt and investor sentiment.
The underlying Bitcoin position is massive. As of September 13, Strategy held 845,050 BTC, acquired for an aggregate $63.73 billion, with an average purchase price of approximately $75,412 per BTC, including fees and expenses. That means Strategy now controls roughly 4% of Bitcoin's total supply, according to the company's own dashboard.
But here is where I think traders need to separate the Bitcoin story from the MSTR story.
If BTC moves higher, MSTR can attract additional momentum because investors are not only pricing the value of Strategy's Bitcoin holdings; they are also pricing the company's ability to raise capital, acquire more BTC and potentially amplify its Bitcoin exposure. That can create a powerful feedback loop during strong crypto markets.
The reverse is equally important.
MSTR can fall much faster than Bitcoin when sentiment turns. Strategy's own data shows 30-day historical volatility around 91%, while its market structure includes approximately $6.7B of debt and $14.5B of preferred securities. The company also has about $5.1B in USD reserves and $1.3B in USD cash, giving it substantial liquidity but also making its capital structure an important part of the trade.
Another detail caught my attention this month. Between September 8 and September 13, Strategy did not purchase or sell Bitcoin and did not sell shares through its ATM program. Instead, it used $139.3M of USD cash to repurchase STRC preferred shares. The company still had $1.05B available under its preferred-stock repurchase program and $1B available under its MSTR stock repurchase program.
For me, that changes how I look at the current rally.
The question is not simply whether Bitcoin can continue higher. The bigger question is whether MSTR's premium, capital structure and investor demand can continue expanding faster than the value of the Bitcoin sitting on its balance sheet.
That is why MSTR can outperform BTC during a risk-on phase — but it can also give back those gains much faster when leverage and sentiment reverse.
The recent numbers show exactly how aggressive this move has been. MSTR closed at $153.92 on September 18, up about 47.7% over one month, while Bitcoin was around $80,901 at the same close. MSTR's 52-week range was still extremely wide at roughly $81.81 to $365.21, showing just how much volatility remains embedded in the stock.
So I would not treat the current MSTR rally as a simple “Bitcoin went up, therefore MSTR should go up” trade.
It is a much bigger equation: BTC price + MSTR premium + capital availability + dilution/repurchase activity + preferred securities + market sentiment.
If Bitcoin keeps establishing higher levels and the market continues rewarding corporate Bitcoin exposure, MSTR can remain extremely reactive to upside momentum. But if BTC loses momentum, the same structure that magnifies the upside can magnify the downside.
That is what makes this rally interesting to me.
MSTR is not Bitcoin. It is a high-beta Bitcoin strategy wrapped inside a publicly traded company.
The real test now is whether MSTR can keep outperforming Bitcoin without the premium and volatility becoming the trade itself.
