Since bottoming out in April 2025, Micron Technology (MU) has delivered an extreme rally, with its share price surging 15-fold in 17 months. But after reaching a new interim high in June this year, the stock quickly retreated, posting a cumulative 22% drawdown.
As the company approaches the key date of releasing its latest earnings report on September 30, this deep correction has triggered intense market debate: Is this adjustment a healthy entry opportunity in the AI memory supercycle, or an early warning of a reversal in the industry cycle?
The core driver of Micron's explosive share-price rise has been the essential demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) created by the AI industry. As 3D-stacked DRAM chips designed for AI large models and high-performance computing, HBM is core supporting hardware for AI computing systems. Only Micron, Samsung, and SK hynix have achieved mass production globally, and the industry has remained chronically undersupplied. The supply-demand imbalance completely ignited Micron's earnings.
The company generated $79 billion in revenue in the first three quarters of fiscal 2026, up 203% year over year, while net profit surged from $5.3 billion in the same period last year to $47 billion.
Institutions forecast that Micron's full-year fiscal 2026 revenue growth will reach 247%. Although growth is expected to slow in fiscal 2027, it could still maintain a high growth rate of 88%. Supported by strong earnings, the company currently has a market capitalization of $1.1 trillion, a gross margin as high as 72.6%, and a forward P/E ratio of just 6 times, putting its valuation at the low end of the industry and providing the core basis for the market's bullish outlook. Even more worth anticipating is the industry's long-term supply-demand structure. HBM production is extremely difficult, consuming three times as many wafers as ordinary DRAM, while capacity is constrained by EUV lithography equipment, making it difficult for the industry's capacity to expand substantially in the short term.
SK hynix predicts that the DRAM supply-demand imbalance will reach a historical peak in 2027, with the market unable to return to balance until 2030 at the earliest. Combined with leading industry players signing long-term supply agreements, the AI-driven memory supercycle has solid fundamental support. However, the inherent cyclicality of the memory industry has created hidden concerns for Micron's rally. Memory chips are standardized commodities, and the industry has continually cycled through “shortage and price increases—overexpansion and oversupply—price cuts and losses.”
The industry is currently at the peak of its cycle, with earnings and gross margins both at historical highs. Once demand for AI infrastructure slows at the margin, the supply-demand balance will quickly reverse, memory prices will fall sharply, and Micron's profitability will be directly hit.
Micron's cyclical risk cannot be ignored based on its historical performance. The company's share price has plunged sharply multiple times, including several declines of more than 50% and two deep drops of over 80%. Its seemingly low valuation currently contains an obvious trap: if net profit falls back to fiscal 2025 levels, its current P/E ratio will soar into the triple digits, completely reshaping the stock's valuation framework. Beyond industry cycles, seasonal market risks are further increasing uncertainty.
September has historically been the weakest month for U.S. stocks, and this effect is significantly amplified in midterm election years. Historical data shows that the S&P 500 Index has repeatedly suffered sharp corrections of more than 5% in September and October of midterm election years, while generally weak market sentiment will weigh on growth stocks.
With multiple factors converging, Micron has arrived at a critical crossroads on the eve of its earnings report.
In the short term, the AI memory shortage remains unchanged and the supercycle has not ended, so the earnings report will likely reflect continued strong conditions, creating a potential tactical trading opportunity; but from a long-term perspective, signs of an industry-cycle turning point are emerging, and negative news at elevated levels could easily trigger selling, making the stock unsuitable for long-term holding.
This 22% drawdown is neither a signal that the rally has ended nor a definitive bottom-fishing opportunity. The September 30 earnings report and the company's subsequent guidance will become the key turning point for validating the strength of the AI memory market and determining the direction of the cycle, directly deciding the course of Micron's subsequent share-price performance. $MU
